This is not good, nearly everyone I know has taken or is taking these.

Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid belong to this class of drugs, which treat heartburn and acid reflux by lowering the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

The drugs, known as proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), appear to significantly elevate the chances of developing chronic kidney disease, according to a study involving more than 250,000 people.

www.npr.org...

They found that PPI users were up to 50 percent more likely to develop chronic kidney disease than non-PPI users, even after adjusting for differences between the two groups.

I was using over the counter ones that do state long term will damage Kidneys. I started taking a spoonful of baking soda anu night I ate spicy or foods i always react too and you know that worked just as good certainly better than the calcium tums types which never help me at all.

I have a ton of friends and Family on nexium, Dr tried to get me to take it to, I'm thinking kickbacks to the Dr from the drug companies.

White foods are generally not to good for you either fella..

To be honest everything is bad for you these days.. from the drugs we take, the food we eat even the water we drink.. you just can't seem to win, especially if you live in a big city in the western world.

Am surprised how many people here suffer with heat burn. . One question thug, if you just stop taking these drugs will the problem not be a lot worse.

Try going on a grain-free/low carb diet (grains can cause inflammation), or losing weight, especially if you have belly fat. Those two things can do wonders for chronic heartburn.

I had problems with heartburn - went on low carb diet, lost some weight - heartburn virtually disappeared.

By the way many think it is like salt and raises the BP but I spent hours researching and found conflicting info but I think it does not.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...

For years, baking soda was recommended because of its antacid effects, mainly to neutralize stomach acids that can cause heartburn, acid indigestion, and related discomforts. As it mixes with the hydrochloric acid in the stomach, baking soda triggers a chemical reaction, and its end products are salt (NaCl, or sodium chloride), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water.

The study

One month later the opposite regimen was followed. NaCl did not influence blood pressure, whereas NaHCO3 decreased systolic blood pressure (by 5 mmHg) in the hypertensive subjects. Both regimens decreased plasma renin activity in the hypertensive subjects but did not consistently influence plasma aldosterone or catecholamines.

Just read one of the studies on this and they said people who stopped using the drugs did not return to having their original reflux problem.

Just a conspiracy thought, but I never had anyone around me have acid reflux, my whole life never heard it mentioned, UNTIL the "purple pill" commercial started on TV and next thing i know my whole Family and friends all over the country complaining of acid! At the time I thought WTHP what a coincidence!

Yes fella, it would. A lot worse at that.

My wife used to be a Dr's receptionist and she said that Omeprazole was one of the highest repeat prescription requests.

Yes, I agree that most things are bad for us these days, or good for us again, then bad for us once more.

Last time I ate that my throat was burning like hell, so I do feel for you guys, if that is a recurring problem.

Definitely, I just look at it now that it's all bad for you, so try and choose the best from a bad bunch.. The lesser evil as it were..

Surprised about the prescriptions to, I would have thought anti depressants would have topped that list.. Guess you learn something every day..

It wasn't top dude, there were a few other drugs just ahead, but it was in the top five.

Ritalin was the top, you can guess the rest.

These drugs are terrible for you. I was on prilosec.

The problems here are at least two fold. One the drug itself and it's side effects and two the actual diagnosis from the dr.

If you have an ulcer for instance. The drug is only lowering acid in your body not treating the bacteria infection causing the ulcer.

The absolute best thing to do is change your diet, find the fermented food to help your gut, and make sure your exercising.

If you have flare ups find papya enzyme. It's like a tums style solution. It works like tums.

Sauerkraut that is actually fermented does a lot for acid reflux issues. It cured my ulcwr and reflux.

The other huge problem with the AR drugs is they can work in the opposite direction. When you stop taking them your body will make acid like crazy. It's actually dangerous to stop taking them cold turkey I'm some cases.

Another problem with AR is associated with the mechanical process of your stomach having a weak valve system. All in all the best thing to do is Ballance out your gut.

I struggled with AR for years. I started eating sauerkraut and real fermented foods and using the papaya and my body responded in just a couple weeks. It's worth a try.

It's also the food itself. One issue with gmo's is the gut bacteria doesn't always know how to digest the food. As people loose their traditional diets and stop eating whole foods gut issues happen. We forget that a huge majority of digestion is having the bacteria that digest the type of diet you have. Some foods feed that bacteria others destroy it. Most traditional cultures have fermented foods as well.

Its actually a sphincter, the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS). Acid reflux can be made worse by foods/drugs that relax the LOS, the main culprits being chocolate and nicotine.

I developed erosive reflux oesophagitis and Barrett's. The pain was debilitating with medical treatment failing. Ended up having a nissen fundoplication where they wrap the top part of you stomach around the oesophagus and stitch it to reinforce the sphincter. It cured the reflux but now I am unable to burp or vomit (side effect of the procedure). Saying that it is a small price to pay.

If you need them, take Zantac... it works on the 'Histamine 2' receptors in your stomach. Very long term use could cause bones to become weak, but I take it once or twice a month...

better than Kidney disease.. geez.

But yeah, its a pill--band aide. it doesn't stop the cause, which is, we all know, what foods we eat.

They LOVE making pills for reactions and not work on cures or cause.

Sphincter/valve same thing
. Mechanical process is probably pretty crude way to describe a biological function.

Your stomach can also be so out of whack the pressure causes the same reaction.

Man and am sorry you went through all that.
