It was an assumption. If you have to trick your members into paying for something that is otherwise free, there is usually a reason to be that big of a douche. Lack of money seemed like the obvious choice. It appears that the owner is just a tiny douche and money isn't his motivator. So I learned something.

I think I discovered ATS and that one around the same time. It was interesting - a lot of way far-out stuff, fun reads, but kind of funneled into the same stuff, with very little in the way of intelligent content. And Thank God(s) ATS doesn't allow random Anonymous posting as some do.

Back in the day, ATS would allow anonymous posting. Came with a cool avatar too.

I remember those days. There was some confusion here because a lot of people thought it was a single member.

There is a sort of unspoken rivalry between ATS & GLP. Members here are probably worried about being banned just from mentioning it. If you try to mention ATS in a thread on GLP, you get a big red pop up message warning that you'll be banned just from typing those 3 letters haha. It's actually a rather hilarious message, I recommend you go test it out. I'd screenshot & post it here but SO would probably smack me on the head with his ban hammer if I did.

I think the issue was much more volatile X amount of years ago when GLP was an actual conspiracy site & threatened ATS in a way. It's always been considered fringe lunatic conspiracy crowd while ATS is the upscale classy conspiracy crowd but lately GLP has degraded into a place for the truly unhinged to congregate.

That being said, I still check it daily (when I'm not banned for "IP resetting"). I have always liked their list of alternative news stories on the main page of the board & even the threads can be entertaining for a short time period before I start wanting to kill myself.

I checked it fairly regularly around the time I joined here I suppose... but this site was always much better IMHO.
Still some OK threads and members over there but this I gravitated here much more.

I'm sure that's true but at the end of the day, I don't give a rat's ass.

Accurate and straight information is the only currency I recognize. Everything else is just noise and BS. Why should people have to guess or surmise exactly what/who we're talking about? How unproductive is that?

Doesn't Deny Ignorance include ignorance in all things? Or is it only some things?

Adults can discern the difference between a factual piece of info and a rah-rah pile of crap.

I've made my views plain, I have no interest in beating a dead horse...

I accidentally clicked on "that place that shall not be named" once, many many moons ago while I was surfing the net on some conspiracy thing (can't remember what).

Needless to say, it's taken me years of heavy therapy to get over the trauma of that whole experience.

That site is in trouble because of their content or lack there of and not because they don't have a membership. For the most part I stop going to sites that start thinking I need to pay them a fee for their service. The local newspaper site comes to mind.

I am not going to pay for 99% of content out there because there will always be free alternatives. I also don't want to encourage the 'pay site' business model.

Other than ATS I can't think of any site I NEED enough to pay them.
