Ignorance does not absolve responsibility

If he's old enough to travel to NK without his mummy & daddy then he's old enough to know not to be an idiot stealing a flag in probably the most strict country on the planet (close call between NK & Saudi Arabia)

Put 1 & 2 together and Why would a 21 year old go to NK and take anything not belonging to him?

To make an impression for a woman possibly?

He did this for a reason, and according to him it was for someone that he wanted to impress that said she wanted one to hang in her church, so we can see it did involve a girl...there's your answer.

Guy's will do some very stupid things to try and impress a girl...especially when your younger.
edit on 17-3-2016 by tsurfer2000h because: (no reason given)

Note to self: Stealing is wrong in my country, and the punishment is probably worse in NK. That crying idiot makes the US look weak. Man up.

I think the north Koreans did everyone a favor he could go on eBay and for 20 $ buy a poster from north Korea. Now hes going to spend years on jail over 20$. As for north Korea you can't convince me 15 years is a normal sentence for taking a baner. Obviously his being an American had a lot to do with his sentence.

Great point, I dont think many have taken this into account. Including me.

NK hates America, we have all seen the propaganda.

Why on earth would you do anything questionable while visiting the most brutal dictatorship on the planet?!?!
He should have read the travel pamphlet more thoroughly.
Especially the part where if you break the law you will serve your time in a labor camp and most likely die there...

He made 2 critical mistakes.
Traveling to NK in the first damn place! Just cause you can doesn't mean you should.
Don't for one second think your nationality will protect you from the wrath of Kim Jong-Un.
He probably takes enjoyment in sentencing westerners to their death.

On a side note I hear Syria is nice this time of year...

There is zero excuse. He wasn't at Disneyland.

I'm going to put my grumpy old man hat on long enough to say that this is a tragic example of what happens when we make constant excuses for youngsters and shelter them from consequences.

Why in the hell would anyone besides the idiot Dennis Rodman want to visit North Korea? Anyone visiting this country is taking a risk. You don't dare fart without being charged with a bogus crime.

That must have been one hell of a banner. It must have had Kim's picture on it. Kim should have been flattered that someone outside North Korea would even want a memento from a lame country like North Korea.

Thanks to our current president, we look incredibly weak and wishy-washy, so punks like un feel like they can get away with crimes like this.

What Crime?

A idiot visited North Korea.

The idiot stole.

The idiot is now doing time.

You think USA citizens should be exempt from laws in other country’s?

Reminds me of that couple a few years back who wanted to go hiking ......

"Hmmm where can we go hiking? I know! Afghanistan!" Needless to say they got their butts in a world of trouble.

Thinking of vaycay? What not travel to lovely North Korea where you can let your hair down and run free!
No worries!

It is absolute idiocy. Like deciding to climb Everest when a blizzard is forecast, then risking the lives of the rescuers to save their dumb asses.

Of course I feel sorry for him and I hope they let him go. I think they let a couple of guys go after six months or so for leaving a Bible in their hotel room. (and Dennis 'forgot' to ask about them while he was there)

Stupid is as stupid does, but I resent it when others must pay the price for arranging a rescue.
