Football is played world wide because it's a great strategic sport, almost like chess.

Football is played worldwide because its cheap, like Metallicus says.

And apparently you know nothing about chess.

Well apparently you know nothing about football much less chess (Which I would wager a guess I would beat you at).

Americans just like to have "cheap" digs because they can't invent their own sports; and instead combine other sports together to form "their own" and then rename them.

American "Football" is also cheap. I could make the ball myself and start playing it.

So why isn't it as popular as Football?

And here is an excerpt from the American Rugby wiki:

"American football evolved in the United States, originating from the sports of association football and rugby football."

So there you have it.

American Rugby is just a bunch of wannabees who use their hands instead of their feet and call it football lmao.

LAME!

That is A reason, but not THE reason. Notice the emphasis. It is a popular sport for the fact that it is very cultural which is the very reason the fans are as they are.

I do find it interesting, that Americans prefer fast paced and more violent/dumb sports such as basketball and American "football". Just an observation I've made living in the States among others when comparing with other nations, in my own experience with European nations.

Further more, it is vastly more strategic than American sports due to its slow pace.

Alas clearly it won't be liked by all, but it is by most in the world and people will be getting excited for this summer, as I certainly am.

I agree Soccer is fun to play but boring to watch.

Only really high level soccer is entertaining to watch on TV.

I personally think both soccer and American football are boring games... Aussie rules is a far better game than both imo, fast paced and goals are being scored constantly.

I have always wondered why Americans never do any good in popular international team sports though? I mean, we can see from the Olympics that Americans a generally good at sport, but there international soccer, rugby and cricket teams generally suck.

btw, you think soccer's boring, you should try watching a cricket game, its like watching paint dry, but people from all over the world are also obsessed with it, just like soccer... each to there own, I suppose.

I find any sport outside of extreme sports boring.
Football(soccer,if you come from the land that can't spell)isn't quite as dull as ice curling but comes close.

It's surrogate warfare, clan battles fought by representatives or avatars.

Sadly you've never had the opportunity to be inside a packed Old Trafford and see Ryan Giggs in full flow. Or Wembley stadium Manchester United v Liverpool when Eric Cantona put the ball in the back of the net or the Camp Nou when Ollie Gunnar Solksjaer won the Champions league final in extra time still make the hairs on the back of my neck rise awesome!

Super bowl 50 tv audience 111.9 million viewers

Sept 2015 Manchester United v Liverpool 700 million viewers

It is a very generic thing to be "into". I have always noticed that football game lovers who are obsessed with it are big fat asses who could never play but know everything about the game.

Exactly. I like when I am playing chess and I check my opponents king and it falls down and pretends it is injured.

It's different strokes though mate.... Americans have their sports and the rest of the world has theirs.
That's just the way it is.

This thread has all kinds of digs from both sides but it just boils down to what you're used to and what you grow up watching and following and hearing about the great players from the past etc.

Football (soccer) is hugely popular in the States anyway... the 4th most popular sport and constantly growing.
Thirty percent of American households contain someone playing soccer, a figure second only to baseball.

If it WAS a popularity contest (which it's not) then there isn't a single "American" sport in the top 5 most popular and supported sports on the planet but as long as people get enjoyment and are entertained by the sports and maybe even actively participate then it's all good.

If I lived in the US then maybe I'd love Baseball or American Football or Basketball or whatever but I don't so I don't.
Americans have always been hugely insular so it's to be expected that they have their own sports that are popular and revered in their own country but mostly not played elsewhere in any great numbers.

Who cares? It doesn't matter.

There are many, many great sports that people enjoy and who cares where it's played or who likes or dislikes it?

If the OP wants to be an ass then that's up to them... it's usually the sign of someone insecure who has to lash out at something they dislike, rather than just ignoring it and just enjoying the things they do like.

I have watched a few football games. I just don't understand why people find this sport exciting. It's really boring unless your watching great 1 on 1 play makers play

Yes football is such a boring game isn't it?

That's why The English Premier League only has a worldwide audience of 4.7 BILLION viewers. That's two thirds of the worlds population Actually that figure was based on the 2010/11 season. The audience numbers have increased since then.

I'm not a fan but it sounds to me like you need to stop "watching the ball" and start looking at what the other players are doing.
