You know, it's staggering to learn new things at my age that I shouldn't have left the public school system without.

Everyone should be handed a hundred feet of good rope and a few pulleys when they graduate the public school system- and they should know how to safely move thrice their weight around with that equipment.

One more thing- the ability to ask WHY.
children are born with it- and we beat it out of them with years of schooling. Just following the "why" in any given situation I've learned more in the last five years than I had in my first twenty.

Here are a couple things that would save people a lot of trouble. One is controlling anger. Another is gun safety.

should know as much as you can about as many different things as you can, oh and should know how to fix things, all kinds of things.
A specialist is just a glorified one trick pony that is helpless when there aren`t other people around to do things for them.

How do you define morals and how might that definition alter in an apocolyptic scenario?

I can only decide my morals, not yours or others.

So, I pose the question here: What fundamental things should people know how to do?

The most fundamental thing people should know how do is to learn. Well, I guess to make it match the plurality of 'things' it could be 'learns' but that would be grammatically incorrect. Like my thinking, and adding too many commas. So, I guess I don't have a proper answer to the question. Sorry about that. Oh, wait, I can add one more item and make it 'things'. Know thy self. Yes. Learn. Know thy self. That's it, fundamental. And love too, people need to know how to love. Not just frolic and folly and bumping pee-pees. You know, sex? But true love. Love for others and self. But not narcissism, too much of that amidst the self entitled brats of the... I digress. Learn. Know the self. Love one another. Maybe tie knots. I read that in one of the responses. I liked it. And cooking... Learn. Know thy self. Love one another. Tie knots. Cook. But that's all redundant and covered by the ability and talent to learn. So is learn. Learn to learn. But we are not asked what people should be able to learn how to do but what what people should know how to do. Inherently? As in without actually learning? Predisposed? Learn. But Love, can we learn to love? Or just grow into it? And then there is Know thy self. Can one learn to know thy self. I suppose, dunno. The most fundamental things people should know how do is to learn and learn to learn.

In my restlessness last night, I surfed the net and stumbled across various subjects of interest, but one in particular caught my attention.

A "man only" site where debating on what makes a man and what things are a "must" that men need know how to do, leaving woman "things" out of the question.

It was most interesting in that it became clear of the changing times from 80 years ago to todays times.

Do we now NEED to know how to properly cover a wagon? Probably not.

To quote Robert Heinlein, who embraced both sexes:

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

So, I pose the question here: What fundamental things should people know how to do?

On a practical level I do not understand how parents let their kids drive cars without knowing how to change a tyre, change the oil and oil filter, keep the tryes at the right pressure and replace some fuses.

On this same level I cannot see how any parent is doing their kids any favours at all by not teaching them how to make their bed, buy food and cook, wash and iron their clothes and budget for a month ahead.

On a higher level I do know why the education system does not teach kids how to draw up a budget, implement a savings program, open a savings account, look after themselves financially in life, understand the trap of interest , know their rights, learn their constitional and lawful (I do not mean legal) rights, how to resist trespass on ones individual sovereignty and illegal actions by authority figures.

Why don't they do these things?

Because the powers that be know that if people don't know how to budget they will fall into the debt trap, most likely for ever, and if they don't know their rights then they have no rights so they will less likely resist anyone in any position of authority.

Moreover, If they do resist trespass on their individual sovereignty, they will likely do it inappropriately and commit an offense and get arrested which will erode their confidence to have another go in future.

I cannot define your morals and actions and, judging by your answer, you are unsure yourself.
