give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.......

how do we fight poverty and crime? here are some of my ideas.

encourage men and women to practice safe sex.

encourage family structure by giving tax credits to lower class families that have a working father living in the home.

offer better quality education in low income neighborhoods.

offer all gangbangers, drug addicts, criminals a quality education and job assistance in exchange for their guns and gang affiliations, give up your guns and gang ties and get an education and a job in return.

those are just a few ideas I have, what kind of ideas do my fellow atsers have?

I like your ideas. Essentially social programs like that cost money. My personal opinion is legalize and tax Marijuana. Tax corporations at the same rate the average individual has to pay, and taking care of our poor and dis-enfranchised will pay for itself!

I understand that you believe that you know how people should live their lives.

Your initial assertion is correct so, if just a small percentage of people practiced this, all poverty would be eliminated, would it not?

What makes you think that giving government more resources will result in anything but more failure?

If you lost your life savings at the craps table, would you get a loan to repair the damage?

Cancel NAFTA and close the borders.

This will bring jobs back.

Short of that, there is no cure, because there are not enough good jobs.

Education will do nothing but make degeree holding fastfood workers and walmart employees.

In short it will only hurt the same poor folks you want to help, because there will still be exactly as many crap paying jobs as there are today.

Just more folks with degrees and student loan debt.

They've been trying to solve poverty for over 50 years already.

Still they can't seem to spell F-A-I-L correctly !!

I bet more people not in poverty have made more money off the poverty/banker scams.

It must be a "funding" problem somewhere.

And more than likely, the only "success" has been the herding techniques.

the problem is that most manufacturing jobs will be obsolete in the future thanks to advancements in technology (automation/robotics) therefor the educational needs will need to be in those fields.

the war on poverty has failed miserably and I understand that government is terrible at money management that is why in my opinion some of the things that would help people out of poverty would cost very little and that would be encouraging safe sex and family structure i.e stopping babies having babies with absentee and or jobless/uneducated fathers. a hard work ethic must also be encouraged whether it be in studying or working either way a drive to advance ones self must be a priority, and that is very hard when there is little hope or opportunity in poor communities.

Like legal ways?
1. close the border
2. legalize weed
3.free condoms/birth control, even though my libertrarian in me says no.
4. put people with mental disorders back into mental institutes

illegal ways( I don't adovate but may produce real results, and are more entertaining to think about)
1. mandatory birth control, tubes snipped at 17-18. fertility rights given back at marriage.
2. construction of mass projects/ghettos in mountain west states. anyone who wants to screw and drug themselves can move there, after 3 years unemployed and on welfare automatically get sent there unless exemption.
3. Where crime is over a certain threshold above the average crime rate the constitution and other rights are suspended. warrantless searches. essentially declared a warzone. clean the place out.

Poverty can't be fixed. A certain amount of the population will always be dysfunctional. and it will get worse. The no father at home issue statistically causes so many issues.

This is definitely where it starts. We need to educate and empower people to take care of themselves, be resourceful and self-sufficient and do not need to be dependent on anyone -- and especially not govt and corporations! Govt has its place in doing so -- as local as possible for the most part; but govt also needs to get out of the way. Too many of the roadblocks and obstacles people face are put there by govt, usually for crony capitalistic purposes.

We can start in junior high and high school, not only focusing more on real life skills -- from budgeting to cooking to sewing, etc -- but also marketable skills with which to make a living. Return shop classes to high schools, and create associations with vocational schools for both juniors and seniors in high school (as well as for all adults who wish to gain new skills), and even build new public vocational schools. If we can get the govt out of the way, we could also return to a system of apprenticeships and journeymen; one-on-one training on the job from those who have mastered the skill. Likewise, we should be using modern technology to increase online college degrees at public colleges/universities, virtually enabling anyone so inclined and willing to earn a degree in virtually any subject at minimal cost.

All of which would be publicly funded and provided at little to no out-of-pocket cost for the student; but I consider it an investment far more than an expense, benefitting us all as a society and as individuals in many many ways, as many of the founding fathers did as well.

how do we fight poverty and crime? here are some of my ideas.

encourage men and women to practice safe sex.

Yes, but start in high school by encouraging boys and girls to practice safe sex... and take it a step further, and teach them what it means to be a parent and the responsibilities of being a parent and how to be a good parent by putting a daycare in every high school and requiring students to actually learn about children and child care. Start with lifelike dolls for all; let those so inclined and/or those who wish actually work in the daycare -- under adult supervision and instruction, of course.

encourage family structure by giving tax credits to lower class families that have a working father living in the home.

I would end the personal income tax on ALL earned income. Not only is it unethical to tax a man's sweat and labor, it creates a never-ending argument between the people, and encourages class warfare. It also makes a very convenient political football for politicians to exploit ad nauseum. It's just one more weapon in the divide-and-conquer arsenal.

offer better quality education in low income neighborhoods.

My above comments cover this, but I want to add that education is another one of those "weapons" used to pick winners and losers, and has been wielded effectively in the inner cities in the guise of "affirmative action," giving some the tools to escape their poverty -- but also leaving much envy and resentment and bitterness in those they leave behind. It has also left many others feeling "reverse discrimination," again with the govt picking the winners and losers, creating yet another wedge between races... just more divide-and-conquer. It's one reason I think ensuring an education for ALL is anabsolute must, as well as making folks independent and self-sufficient -- the stronger the people are as individuals, the weaker the govt is by default.

offer all gangbangers, drug addicts, criminals a quality education and job assistance in exchange for their guns and gang affiliations, give up your guns and gang ties and get an education and a job in return.

Yes, education for all!

Of course, going back to getting govt out of the way, there is much we can and much do to encourage and promote small business, freelancers, cottage industries, internet companies, etc., starting with -- again -- eliminating personal income taxes on most small individually/family owned companies.... we'll leave the taxes for those govt entitled legal fictional entities called "corporations," as well as tariffs and foreign companies who wish to sell their goods here.

(Sorry so long! I've given this much thought...)

In the future maybe most manufacturing jobs will be obsolete, but they arent today and wont be for quite a while yet.

It is pointless to waste money on higher education when there arent jobs for those people to fill.

Retail and fast food will be obsolete before manufacturing will be.

And these jobs are a majority of the workforce today.

Short of cancelling all free trade agreements and closing the borders for real, only a more socialist, automatic living wage just for living will be necessary to stave off severe poverty in the near future.

Because mcdonalds and walmart will be fully automated long before the GM plant is.

AT that point, there wont even be crappy paying jobs for most of the workforce.

In short, our short sighted leaders have ran us off a cliff in the name of short term profit growth.

I have many ideas to try to remedy this.

None that most would like though.

Because those that are doing ok or well dont want to see a change.

I'd rather wage a war against greed. It will have a better outcome than a war against poverty

Ban all usury.
Give all new families new land to build a home.
Throw away 99% building codes that only profits the housing industry so housing would be far cheaper.
Free medical for all
Free education for all

Perhaps all doable by just shutting down the Military Industrial Complex and forcing all companies to pay their fair share of tax.

Great ideas on paper, but not workable in reality.

Usury exists because why would I lend you $300,000 and risk never getting it back while losing the ability to invest it and make money from it for the length of your loan?

Nobody would do this, except a billionaire who would never miss it.

Free medical sucks in every country it exists in, there are not enough people to serve the needs of the public in a low paying profession that takes so much of your time for little of a pay off.

Free education suffers the same problems as free medical care.

Nothing is free in this world, nothing.

Everything has a cost, everything.

Its already in existence, its Islamic banking and finance model that handles trillions or did, before they got attacked by the Rothschild bulldog (US). When people don't need to spend a lifetime of wealth paying of usury to make the elite rich, it can be left in banks to help others. Many asians also do the same because they have a healthy disrespect for banks. They loan each other (family and friends) the money to build homes. Inflation is an artefact of usury so also be good to rid the planet of that as well.

I live in a country with medicare (australia) and it works. Its not really free as taxpayers eventually pay it in taxes but it rids the system of insurance companies etc that profit from something that doesn't reward society.

You know, you're going to catch some flack from people claiming we already do some of that stuff, or that those people don't deserve it or whatever...

At least you're thinking about solutions instead of focusing on just the problem. So S&F to you good sir!

We have enough people running around screaming about how bad things are, but never coming up with any sensible or workable ways to help out. This country is dying and rotting inside from a lack of creativity on the part of its citizenry. We simply can't be complacent and expect the folks in DC to solve our problems!

So just remember that even though there are going to be detractors and dismissive folks -- don't loose your desire to come up with new ideas and outside of the box approaches to our problems. We need more folks with ideas!

1. Tear up all free trade treaties.
2. Enact massive import tariffs on all goods manufactured outside the US.
3. Reign in the permitting and regulatory agencies and codes to encourage industrial growth in America rather than neutering it as is currently the SOP.
4. Eliminate all safety nets for able bodied adults between the ages of 18 and 65. Once jobs reappear, we need to give the right to fail back to the people.
5. Make all student loan payments tax deductable and eliminate student loans for non-professional, non-profitable career degrees... there is no reason the tax payers should have to subsidize the lives of people who have $60k in debt for a degree in modern literature just because they cannot make enough money to feed and house themselves while also paying for their student loan.
6. Reduce taxes on the middle and upper middle class to stimulate the economy, which will increase the demand for workers even further.

If he is hungry, he will starve before learning the fine art of fishing!
That just sounds like something a selfish greedy man would say to keep his wealth to himself!
FEED him, AND teach him to fish, perhaps!!

war on poverty ideas.

There are sufficient resources for all to live well, if the selfish and greedy did not take more than they need, of anything! Ever!

'Charity' is not taking more than you need! Ever!

But that's HARD!
One must DO WITHOUT!
There is a huge difference between what you 'need' and what you 'want'!
But Charity is a Virtue of Love!
You cannot force it on someone!
It has to come from within...

There will be selfishness and greed and there will be those who pay for your selfish greed in poverty and hunger, until we all Become Enlightened, unconditionally Loving!

And that is not for a couple centuries, yet.
Until then, we can BE the change that we want to see!
Ease up on out ego/consumerism, and leave a peach for the other guy!

"Do NOT do to 'others' what you don't want done to you!"
(EVERYTHING in the Universe (and everyone), is 'others', and 'others' Is Self!)!

True, unconditional Love is ALWAYS recognized by It's unconditional Virtues; Compassion, Empathy, Sympathy, Gratitude, Humility, Charity (charity is never taking more than your share of anything, ever!), Honesty, Happiness, Faith...
ALWAYS!

Get rid of capitalism.

Git rid of the "we need to fix everything" mindset. Why does everyone have to feel the need to save everything?

Poverty is a way of life. Do the best to improve your life and try to encourage the people you know to do better for themselves.

War on poverty will go over as well as the war on drugs.

This is a response to your ideas...

1) Already done. One of the things planned parenthod takes care off.

2) Its already done. The biggest pay day is when you pay your yearly taxes or as i like to call it, getting jacked for your paper day.

3) So not going to happen. School funding is tied to property taxes. Poor neighborhoods tend to have underfunded schools. It's a trap!

4) they do that, you can go for a degree while injail, though I dont know if each prison offers that?

All in all not bad ideas, though i believe in bringing economic opportunities to those that find themselves in that situation.
