Video shot by a local radio broadcaster caught Republican Mississippi state Rep. Bubba Carpenter using racial language to suggest to fellow Republicans that a ballot initiative to improve education was actually a plot to fund black schools at a cost to white schools.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that Carpenter was filmed by WMRG while speaking to the Tishomingo County Midway Republican Rally about the danger of Initiative 42, which would give a Hinds County judge control of school funding if the Mississippi legislature failed to lift the state from its last place national ranking on education.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, Republicans in the state had been using the phrase “Hinds County judge” as a racial dog whistle because the county is predominately black and has two female black judges.

But Carpenter dropped the coded language in a plea to defeat the initiative.

“If 42 passes in its form, a judge in Hinds County, Mississippi, predominantly black — it’s going to be a black judge — they’re going to tell us where the state education money goes,” the lawmaker warned.

I bet he would be the same guy that then turns around and says the problem is those kids over there are not getting educated.

Why do people want to punish the kids that have no stake in the tax base at the school? What is so bad about helping a school?

Reverse the races, black politicians say this exact stuff all the time. In fact, black civil leaders AND politicians regularly, openly advocate specifically for blacks. Why can't whites do the same thing? What is wrong in America that the POTUS and FLOTUS can openly make racial remarks?, pro black advocacy remarks that is, but whites cannot? Why is white America barred from advocating for itself openly and without apology?

Why this double standard?

Nearly 60yrs after Plessy Vs Ferguson separate but unequal is still championed by some in one of the state with the lowest educational prospects in America, the push to defund schools throughout the states is coming from a single source and if they failed at that introducing nonsense curriculum to retard our kid's education.

The difference is one is trying to gain access denied while the other tries to block access, and the POTUS and FLOTUS dare not say anything in regards to seemingly racial injustices??.

What double standard?

If you reversed the races I would still be 100% against the rhetoric.

Who is saying stuff like this all the time btw?

Sremmos80 the problem here is some will never accept folks of African descent and others of being fully Americans for them they always will be the traditional "Other" they are just Americans by proxy, yes compared to the bad ol days we have come along way, but in some quarters we may well be back in 1954 .

I really don't see the problem? Initiative 42 wants more funding for public schools. What's the issues?

Here's the link to what they want:
42forbetterschools.org...

Our state Legislature passed a law in 1997 that promised us that each public school district in Mississippi would receive enough financial support to adequately fund every K-12 education program in our state. But our Legislature has gone back on that promise, only fully funding public schools twice in nearly 20 years.

The result is a $1.7 billion statewide shortfall since FY2009 – enough money to pay for:

4,871 first-year teachers for 10 years, or
16.7 million textbooks, or
4,555 reading coaches for 10 years, or
5.6 million computers, or
17,634 school buses

What does Bubba even mean by black and white schools? Are white kids not allowed to attend black schools? Are black kids not allowed to attend white schools? At the end of the day we're talking about public schools. Bubba obviously just has a problem with black people, period.

While I don't know the specifics, my hunch is basically they are going to take tax dollars from wealthier majority white districts and give to poorer majority black districts.

You didn't even need the video. All you had to do was say it was a Republican named Bubba from Mississippi and everyone would be able to figure out what was in it.

Sometimes stereotypes exist for a reason.

Do you see the irony in your statement? The POTUS and FLOTUS are both black, educated and certainly on their way to substantial wealth. And yet, here you are, talking about denied access. What denied access?

The Obama's made it, the Winfreys made it, the Knowles Carter's are doing really well, Ben Carson's doin alright. That's politics, entertainment music and medicine. What denied access?

Access denied by means of redlining, gerrymandering, repeated attempt at turning back the clock by pols , not all black communities in all states faces the same problems however poor communities including poor black communities have to fight very hard for funding for schools etc.
The POTUS and FLOTUS came from a middle class background the others working class from states where higher education is available and your example is kinda skewed in the first place, there were rich Black folks during slavery and Jim Crow era but their success didn't mean jack to the vast majority , in this all states are not created equal, off course this goes beyond race and shades into class, Hammanderr what I am trying to get through to you is these poor states made willfully so because of ideologues and outdated traditions is keeping most folks poor and they are left to fight for the scraps, this gentleman called Bubba, is worried that whatever scrap being thrown might be snatched up by folks more desperate than his folks, what if he were to champion the need for education for all the citizens of his state or district, find common cause fighting poverty, obesity linked to poverty and health issues, teenage pregnancy and the predictable criminality that came from the above , instead of playing their Hunger Games.

It is sad, truly, that anyone is poor and uneducated in the USA in 2015, because people move here from all over the world and make it within a generation. You mentioned gerrymandering, redlining, politicians turning back the clock, but you didn't mention poor parenting, illiteracy, teenagers having children. There is a fact, a simple one, that you are dancing around. Maybe you don't realize it or maybe you just don't wish to acknowledge it, but it's there.

The hardships facing African Americans are tiny, tiny!!! We have free education in this country, we've had free, basic healthcare for the poor for years. No one starves to death in this country, no one freezes to death, no one lives in refugee camps, no one is forcing African Americans to live in the ghettos of Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore or Chicago.

African Americans have special scholarships to college, special hate crime laws designed for them and them alone, pretty much anyway. Every white kid learns about the horrors of slavery in school, hears the words and benefits of equality, diversity and opportunity, ad nauseum for years, years!! What more do you want?

When are blacks in America going to own their situation? When are they going to stop blaming circumstance? When will blacks in this country buy into the idea that they are the masters of their destiny? Some dude in mississippi doesn't like black people?, so what?

The hardships are intergenerational and hyper in some quarters of the states, You said no one is forcing AAs to live in ghettos of Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore or Chicago. true but then there is redlining through banks and other issues you don't have to deal with and after all what are we discussing here??.. potential funding for schools in predominantly AA this districts Bubba is hardly some dude from Mississippi that don't like Black folks he have pull, and he fears Blacks who may also have pull, hence this thread and why we are here discussing this, You said every White kid have to learn about slavery, well history is history but what is being done to correct the historical wrongs..without blockage and interference AAs have special Hate crime laws?? really??.. last time I checked a Hate crime is a hate crime regardless of who committed it, a group or an individual Black that assaults a white individual or others solely on the basis of "race" is subject to prosecution under hate crimes laws it is a long running myth to suggest otherwise, if you want examples I can supply them.
No one starves to death but some goes hungry, and yes some do freeze to death and while no one live in refugee camps many live in shelters or under bridges. You mention bad parenting..well what is the origins of bad parenting if not a cycle of poverty and all that it entails. You said when are Blacks in America gonna own their own situation ..well that all depends on which blacks you are talking about, btw if you are thinking that Blacks are the number one benefactor of affirmative action I have news for you, the number one benefactors of affirmative action in education is White females, not that I am against that mind you but just stating a fact, numbers can be provided upon request.

in their case they're correct. white racists are incorrect because the system already favors them. truth is we need equality and not letting ourselves be divided and conquered by the rich.

Just as true as what you said it is also that many blacks will ever accept whites.
