Privatize the prison system and take it off the backs of the taxpayers.

Could you please show examples of for profit prisons taking anything off the backs of the taxpayers?

They don't exist as yet; would you rather hear how they could work (a proposed plan).

OIC you're in support of the cheap labor they would supply corporations at the expense of the taxpayers.

as for your plans...

The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

Robert Burns; That would be "schemes" not plans. Cheap labor? Forty grand a year to house one inmate? How does the criminal become finally accountable for the crime they were convicted of (by doing their time). WHAT? they put themselves into this situation of confinement we pay for. I think its about time (instead of robbing or killing people) they need to come face to face with what "self sufficiency" implies. Grow your own food in a prison garden (organic even), raise and butcher livestock TO EAT. Make your own clothes (BE CREATIVE) after you have grown the cotton to then weave into cloth. Not sure about how they are going to pay the rent; or for the security guards 24-7 vigilance. Let the inmates decide what they want to do as entrepreneurs to pay everything else on a "Prison Goods" website. Let capitalism do its thing with the private sector in charge, bidding against each other. Here is the plus, the institutions are already in place (taxpayer dollars at work).

I see cheap labor is not enough you want to make freebies of our existing infrastructure! Why shouldn't our government sale these facilities to the highest bidder, just like any good capitalists would?

Giving away freebies...

...is not capitalism!

I have learned here at ATS thats socialism!

In this case corporate socialism!!!!!!

Thanks for the laughs!

Thanking you at my expense I suppose! Cheap labor is required of convicted inmates; don't tell me they should earn a wage because you know what that means; it goes right back to paying their housing costs. I think the government should auction off these Slum Lord properties to the highest bidder (good luck getting rid of or making use of the free-loading no-good squatters occupying the tiers).

I will quit conversing with you now, as you have not given any facts, merely opinions and a half baked plan to support your point of view! Since this is all about you, it seems you are baiting me into a personal attack on you and your baked up plan that consists of one paragraph to fix the entire prison system.

What a waste of time!!!!

I cannot give any facts because privatizing prisons have not happened on a large enough scale yet to be studied adequately; works or doesn't work? There are so many variables involved here regarding human treatment, justification of putting inmates in the position of being self sufficient; instead of merely being locked up to serve a sentence of time. Perhaps for the first time in their lives live without having to resort to being predators unleashed upon the more innocent unsuspecting successful individuals of their specie. No waste of my time, much fun. Not sure what a 'baked up plan' means. If its a dark chocolate chewy 'brownie'; I never met one I didn't like.

Mystik and the resident clowns that think targeting private prisons is a bad thing.

Jesus Christ... And you wonder why our nation is so damn corrupt and rife with inequality.

I'm not saying its bad. I'm saying it is misguided. The bigger issue is the system that creates the inmates in the first place. We have more people in prison here than China does. That, to me, is a much bigger issue. If you solve that issue, the private prison issue goes away as well.

This is because China has zero tolerance for crime. This is an easy fix. Let a communist government take over this democratic one. If even suspected of criminal activity you just disappear (no need for expensive incarceration). A Communist system doesn't tolerate crime of any type (stealing is stealing; murdering a worker; that potential laborer now missing robs/takes from the state). Civil disobedience is not an idea form powerful enough to cause a revolution. China executes its violent offenders (no prisons necessary) and for the mild offenses? those convicted are put to work on farms run by the state (indentured) for however long they live (not sure they are given sentences).

Once corporations start to make a healthy profit off of prison labor, what do they do when that labor runs low? Or they start to demand a specific skill-set? Start encouraging Law Enforcement to round up more folks with skill x or y?

I imagine folks with engineering skills can turn a pretty petty as official corporate slaves. How about more drug busts in Silicon Valley?

Business is about profit, not justice. Private prisons are seeing all kinds of conflicts already...Like private prison lobbyists lobbying for stricter and longer prison sentences. Private prisons are one of the reasons everyone is having a hard time peeling back the egregious prison sentences for first time drug offenses.

Locking up people in the USA has become BIG BUSINESS...and that is just effed every way you look at it.

You realize you are actually describing a communistic system; not one democratic except for one thing, Communists kill those that distain laws/no due process for those poor souls as 'official dome' make them up on the fly/punishment is a pre-requisite to the charge . There is no gain for the taxpayer HERE to incarcerate innocents (huge burden). In China the lessor the crime (invented on the spot) the more workers for that weird collective called the "FARM COOPERATIVE" rehabilitation center.

Bernie Sanders is creepy. Any politician who would openly admit to being a socialist is probably even worse than they claim to be.

Or honest?

I would take him over a right wing nut job like Larry Kraig, espousing homophobia from the senate floor while soliciting gay sex in an airport bathrooms.

Bernie Sanders explaining he is best defined as a socialist is kind of refreshing, whatever your politics.

I am not a big fan of Bernie, but he is the best of the mainstream, main party candidates.

He wants to end private prisons which is REALLY important and needs to be done. They are way too dangerous.

He also wants to end presidential candidates from being able to take donations from corporations and pacs (he refused money from them). Only private citizens should be able to donate. Presidents are owned when they take money from corporations, unions, and pacs. This is a way to tackle political corruption.

Lastly, he is a pro second amendment Democrat. Which of course is good.

I still think voting is corrupt and I prefer a libertarian candidate, but if we have no real choice and we are looking at another mainstream candidate I'd take Sanders over Clinton or Bush. Unfortunately we will have another Clinton.

It doesn't matter if it's a small number. If it's allowed and people make money from it then others will join the bandwagon. Also we know for a fact Judges have, will, and probably are currently giving people long sentences to cash in on for profit prisons. The judge that was arrested was giving sentences for crimes that usually aren't punished beyond a fine. Last and scariest, they found kids in one private prison qere held months and months beyond their release date. People are tossed into the machine and forgotten by the world while the for profit prison knowingly holds them past their release because they are making money off the prisoner.

What doesn't exist yet? For profit prisons absolutely exist and are already horribly corrupt. They have been caught holding prisoners beyondntheir release date and paying judges to fill their prison and give longer sentences so they get paid more.

See my last post. How do you think for profit prisons get paid? Tax payers. They corrupt judges to sentence more people and for longer then get tax payer money to take those prisoners. Then they have been caught holding prisoners beyond their release date and thus collecting more of our money to violate someone's rights and steal their life away.

I totally agree, private prisons are just another despicable form of slavery!

I see, rather then taking the burden off the taxpayers back, the private prisons are taking the shirts off the taxpayers backs! For profit prisons have no intentions of lightening the burden on the taxpayer.

Bottom line private prison exist to make profits.

The prisons that vethumanbeing is talking about are fictitious dreams only existing in his own mind!!

The real life private prisons that exist today are very dangerous to the future of our freedom!
