The government shutdowns we have witnessed are nothing more than a political mind trick. The employees who do not go to work are still paid. Basically, they are paid to sit at home like an extra few days of vacation. Let them shut the damn thing down and not reopen until everyone has removed their heads from their butt. These stopgap budget bills are getting ridiculous. Do your job or move on so we can put someone in there that will do something. In my opinion, all they are doing is making a good case for term limits.

It's more like they get paid eventually...

If it drags out it can really screw some folks.

Remember not every government employee makes 6 figures.

You are right, not all of them make enough and live paycheck to paycheck. However, when we have had a shut down we contact the banks of those employees and write letters to the creditors. We do everything we can to help the employee while they are in a nonpaid status. If a check bounces, we end up paying the overdraft fees. At least that is how it works in Nebraska when a Federal shutdown occurs.

It is political posturing is all. And fear mongering. Oh they will run that clock down to the last second and then surprise, surprise, a bill will come up and get passed and then things will go on, with both sides claiming some form of victory over the other.
