I found this amazing image of what looks like a dome in a crater on Mars.

closeup

Have any of you seen this before?
Is there an official explanation for what we are seeing?

Unfortunately I am having problems embedding the image

More than likely a sand dune at the center of that crater.

Yes probably, but it really gives the impression of a hemisphere.

That is intriuging-it looks like a perfect semi submerged sphere.
It seems to have a uniform pattern on the surface as well.
Very weird, and unlike the more common "spire" formations we sometimes see in the center of craters(which are the remains of whatever chunk of rock created the crater as I understand it).
This looks very different.

Good find-I would love to see a closer higher resolution image of the crater.

Edit: Hmm,looks like dunes in the pic posted by Gortex.

It Is fake (in a sense). It's a false colour image, which provide much more useful scientific data than true colour images. Don't forget, space probes and rovers/landers are scientific instruments, not tourists!

Looks to me like a small comet or asteroid crash landed, didn't disintegrate, and over the eons has been covered with sand. Must have been a really dense object, or it didn't slam into the planet fast enough to crumble..or both.

Cool image. Anyone else noticed how the bottom part of the dune looks like a voronoi diagram? Interesting!
