While I'm glad that no one was seriously hurt we still have to ponder the fate of all that bacony goodness. Where will it end up? If they decide to destroy by fire can people bring their personal frying pans? And last but certainly not least we have to ponder the egg shortage in the US. Is this the end of the Egg McMuffin?

Some things just make you want to give up the struggle of day to day life and a bacon shortage might cause a rash of breakfast related suicides.

Amtrak Train Collides/Accident/Crash With Truck Full of Bacon In Illinois. 6-June-2015 *-* An Amtrak train collided Friday afternoon with a tractor-trailer carrying 70,000 pounds of bacon that was obstructing the tracks, officials said.

While the Associated Press reported that none of the 203 passengers or crew were injured, Herwitz told the station a passenger next to him bumped his head on the seat in front of him and that he saw a woman taken to an ambulance. The driver of the semitrailer walked away from the crash, he told WMAQ.

Bon Apetit!

I'm with ya on that one.

Please don't give up the good fight bacon. You mean so much to so many and are living in the memory of so many waistlines.

This is tragic. The people of Illinois should be deeply saddened by the loss of 70,000 lbs of bacon. Hopefully, some may be salvaged by holding an on site cookout. Bacon has the power to bring people together...

70,000 lbs on a trailer with a 44,000 lb weight limit. Perhaps this has something to do with why there was a problem? Not really, just bad reporting.

Also, as reported on local news, it was mostly turkeys & hams (Thank God!) I didn't watch the video, so I pray the local news was correct and not the video. That's a lot of happiness lost to the world if it was truly bacon. So many pigs who died for no reason, so many men, women & children with ruined mornings. Emmanuel Kant's greatest happiness principle will have taken a tremendous hit. Stay strong, brothers and sisters... Stay strong.

/runs to Mariano's to empty the shelves of what precious little bacon remains/

The owner of the load will write it off and claim the insurance

My FD had a similar occurrence on interstate highway = truck load of vacuum packed ribs jackknifed and flipped onto divider

State DOT arrived to clean up the mess - we were standing by in case needed. Dot guys said want some ribs......

Loaded up our rig with 10 lb packages of ribs. Had good BBQ later at firehouse ........

My granddaughter would have been picking up bacon on side of the road. That would be heaven for her.

I like bacon occasionally, like a full pound once every month, but she could and would eat it every day.

The egg muffin is made with Canadian bacon. Which if you ask any American is really ham and not bacon at all.

What grind my gears. is.
All this food will be trashed when there are millions of people going hungry.
It's very common for grocery chains to throw out perfectly edible foods. It's kind of sad really. Should cook it all and have a giant party.

i was just going to post a very similar point -

i dont know the US regs for haulage weights

but here in the UK 31.8 tons cargo would not be allowed in a 2 axle trailer - under any circumstance

Always a sad day to see any pork product wasted. I have to wonder if America should be looking into national locomotive regulations. If the system took more care to prevent dangerous tracks from getting trains, perhaps this bacon would still be with us all.
