DARPA: Cortical Modems and Neural RAMplants

OK this sounds scary, brain implants that interact at the conscious mind. Johnny Mnemonic Here we come!

A compelling encore to inventing the Internet appears more elusive for DARPA with each passing day. But what if they could put the Internet in your brain? That might turn some heads. Before anyone gets around to that, it would seem prudent to try to put just a single idea into a mind — a single memory, skill, or replay of some notable event. With a news release announced yesterday, DARPA intends to do just that.

The solicitation is for a two-year research program to develop what they are calling RAM Replay, or implants for ‘Restoring Active Memory’. This concept has not been hatched in full form out of thin air, but rather builds on a succession of recent projects to build an interface that is active at the level of the conscious mind — a cognitive implant, if you will. Just this February DARPA sponsored a meeting in the Silicon Valley area where they discussed futuristic conceptions for what they call a cortical modem.

Everything that we hear about that they are talking about doing they are already doing. Just take that as a given.

No no no...already done...they're just looking for the type of minds that are suited for their work at those sort of events. You can bet there were SAP recruiters present.

Wow. This really pushes the envelope for disbelief. I have stomach-churning issues in figuring out why would anyone still having their marbles, ever want to try this path of research - and what a perverted universe of ideas is driving applications for what ever pops out from this Pandora's box. I mean - WHAT - WHY?

Simply the ultimate quest for what it means to be human. Some minds want the power of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory TV phenomenon. All the rest merely wants to languish with their beer and let the TV do their thinking for them.
