When I think of metal I think of Pantera , White Zombie, Deftones, Korn, Gwar, Metallica, Megadeth and so on but I went on wiki and got blasted with all these sub genres. Absolute craziness . I thought I was a big fan but with all these sub genres I guess I never had a clue what metal music is.

Fun discovery huh? Yeah, there's a whole world out there beyond radio friendly metal music.

Our society seems to have the need to label and categorize everything. I assume it is probably for all the new online radio stations and other genre sorting apps. I just want to rock. I don't need labels.

It's madness isn't it! I remember when I was growing up, I struggled to cope with the difference between speed & thrash... my head would have melted had 3 million other derivatives existed back then!

By the way, check out pirate metal. I stumbled upon its existence the other day... and it's goooooood

I'm a big fan of Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend. They'd be classed as metal but sound nothing like Metallica, megadeth etc (thrash)
Nor Pantera (groove/doom metal)
Then there's buckethead he plays metal but it's more of a Jazz/Pop/Funk hybrid of metal,
Primus is another one hard to classify.

Wow. I knew there were a lot but not that many. Kind of doesn't really matter to me though. I'm with Metallicus. Just like to jam. BTW, Clutch and Mastodon at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison Colorado this weekend! I'm jacked...

I used to be more into metal when i was in high school, but of course i've mellowed out a bit since then. Still listen to Slayer and Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom and what not, but anymore, its hard to keep up. Also, I once dated a chick who was in a band that played something called "Sludge Metal". It sounded about as good as you can imagine lol.

I hate to break it to you, but these classifications are bunkum. Sure, some of them are even phrases coined by the initiators of these so called sub genres. But the fact of the matter is, that if you windmill rather than twerk, if you prefer Soulfly over Soulja Boy, if you prefer double kick drumming over the Rizzle Kicks, then no matter what subgenres you listen to, the reality is that you are a metalhead, and no further explanation is necessary.

No matter whether you like At The Gates more than Carcass, or Megadeth over Meshuggah, we all march beneath the banner of steel, and as such you are as good as blood kin of mine. Most metal heads have interests in music from many, if not all of those sub classifications, and there is no need to specialise. I personally have an affinity for the pseudo orchestral arrangements to be found in black metal tracks, Emperor being the ultimate purveyors of such sonic mastery. But I also find myself drawn to technical death metal, and to folk metal, and indeed to thrash, and a whole heap of others. Mostly, I just love me some good, heavy, face pounding, ribcage smashing, vertebra crushing, gonad obliterating metal, and I do not care what it gets packaged as, so long as it makes me feel sky scraper tall and bullet proof for the duration of the track.

Mastodon! I think they are the best metal has to offer these days. Brann Dailer is easily one of the best drummers in the world... metal or otherwise. Great band, and solid dudes.

Wikipedia to discover sub genres!?

Try this site out: everynoise.com...

This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1375 genres by The Echo Nest. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.

Click anything to hear an example of what it sounds like.

Click the » on a genre to see a map of its artists.

Be forewarned, you may lose hours exploring!

My friends and I are metalheads and the list of subgenres are a constant source of entertainment for us.

It used to be that every time a new band came out, some pretentious writer for a magazine would create a new genre specifically for them. I remember when Dragonforce came out and everyone was referring to them as "Nintendo Metal." I think it was at that point that we realized the naming for genres was becoming superfluous.

There are 5 subgenres of metal that everything fits into nicely:

Black metal
Death Metal
Thrash Metal
Folk Metal
Metal Metal (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, King Diamond, etc...)

And, yes, I listed them in order of greatness.

Most metalheads I know would be loathe to call bands like White Zombie, Deftones, or Korn metal.

Anyway, this is officially a metal thread.

glad to hear it. As I was looking at the list that specifically stood out to me and became interested in hearing the sound. Any particular artists/bands to go after??

What would you guys classify "In This Moment" in all this sub category?? I just figured metal has different sounds on the artists, did not really feel the need to identify a label for each sound.
Female lead singer, I feel like the band plays well.

I really enjoy that angry rage sound.

I also really enjoy Motorhead which I actually discovered on Pandora. I did not really get into metal until around 2010.

I think you pretty much nailed it.

I've got to agree with what you said about the orchestral bands, they are my favorites.
