It’s long been an enduring murder mystery, a shocking and horrific puzzle that has never satisfactorily been solved to this day. Something or someone has been killing our herd animals for a long, long time. The remains of the de-sanguinated carcasses, with organs and body parts missing are the only clue left behind for farmers, ranchers, scientists and policemen to puzzle over. The specifics may vary from case to case. But there seems to be a pattern suggesting these are something more than random attacks on livestock.

The majority of these types of animal mutilations occur in North America. Although sheep, horses, goats, deer and elk have also been reported mutilated with similar precision across the globe it is cattle mutilation which attracts the most attention.

The attempts to explain the phenomena range from the mundane to the supernatural. Deaths have been blamed on predators, natural decomposition, secret cult activities, clandestine government agencies and even crytptids down the years. Yet one theory has prevailed since the first modern cases were reported. It is that some form of extra-terrestrial intelligence is involved.

Livestock mutilations actually date back centuries and have been reported by people like Charles Fort in the past. But it wasn’t until the late 1960s that they hit the headlines on a global scale.

’Snippy’

Perhaps the first recognised modern ‘mute’ case is that of ‘Snippy’ which occurred on September 9th, 1967 near Alamosa, Colorado on the Harry King ranch. The victim was not a bovine but a horse. ‘Lady’ (the real name of the horse) failed to appear for water. Two days later Lady’s remains were found in a pasture.

She was discovered lay on her side with her skin stripped bare from the neck and shoulder. The cuts seemed surgical and precise. There were no tracks near the body, no traces of blood, a series of burns were found on the ground at the scene and there was a distinct smell of formaldehyde in the atmosphere. The brain, lungs , digestive organs and heart were missing from the carcass. Within two weeks the bones had turned black.

The local sheriff was unimpressed and decided it was all simply caused by a lightning strike without ever setting foot on the ranch.

However this was far from the end of the story.

The horse's owner, Nellie Lewis, accompanied by Harry King, visited the spot where ‘Lady’ had been found. She reported finding a flattened bush and what seemed to be exhaust marks. She also said she smelled a strange, sweet odour, "like incense”. There were even reports of radiation detected near the body by a forestry official after Lewis claimed to have picked up a piece of horse flesh at the scene which burned her hand.

On another check six indentations forming a circle three feet in diameter were supposedly found in the brush approximately 2” across and 4”deep. Amongst all of this mystery, UFOs were being sighted in the surrounding areas. More animals, both horses and cows, were found mutilated in the same area just a few weeks later in a similar condition, sometimes only a few hours after ranchers had checked on them. Nellie Lewis became convinced that this strange death of her horse was the work of extra-terrestrials and due to the disinterest of the authorities used her connections with the local paper.

On October 5, 1967 the press picked up on the stories and incorrectly dubbed it the “Snippy” case (One of Lady's parents was named Snippy). The story was soon spread both nationally and internationally.

Dead Horse Riddle Sparks UFO Buffs –Pueblo Chieftan

By THE CHIEFTAIN STAFF

ALAMOSA (C-SJ) - The death of a horse in the San Luis Valley during early September appeared Friday to have sparked a renewed interest in unidentified flying objects throughout the West.

In Houston, Tex., a group of UFO enthusiasts left Friday night for the San Luis Valley to inspect the dead horse and also to investigate many reported UFO sightings in the valley........

Snippy the Appaloosa is dead, and the circumstances surrounding his death are far from clear.

Full text available : Pueblo Chieftan - 1967

Dr Robert O. Adams, head of Colorado State University's Veterinary and Biomedical Science School examined the case. He made it clear there were 'No unearthly causes, at least not to my mind.' Inspecting the corpse and noting a severe infection in Snippy's hindquarters, he speculated that someone had come across the dying horse and slit its throat to prevent further suffering. He believed that scavengers had inflicted the rest of the damage to the horse.

Mrs. Lewis argued that Adams' conclusions were flawed because of his failure to explain the lack of blood, the radiation, and the many other strange facets of the case.

The Marks of the Beast

The 1970s were the decade when ‘cattle’ mutilations became a unique phenomenon in their own right across America. Farms and ranches saw numerous deaths of cattle under what seemed to be highly mysterious circumstances. By the end of the century it was estimated that well in excess of 10,000 and perhaps as many as 100,000 cattle mutilations had occurred.

A common pattern was developing:

1) No obvious visible cause of death.
2) Body parts appeared to have been removed with surgical precision;.
3) Cattle were systematically drained of blood, seemingly through small holes punched in their jugular vein.
4) Internal organs removed (especially the sex organs seemed to have been cut away).
5) In some cases evidence of residual radiation or animal tranquilizing chemicals were (allegedly) found.
6) Some animals were found with broken legs and backs pushed into the ground. Suggesting they had been dropped from above.
7) No footprints found near the carcasses.
8) Unidentified aircraft and lights were often seen in the areas where the mutilations occurred.

Over the winter of 1974 and into spring of 1975 hundreds of cattle were found dead in strange circumstances across 22 of the Southern and Western States of the US.

Also in 1975, an agent for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, Donald Flickinger, investigated reports of a nationwide Satanist cult network engaged in animal and human sacrifice. He found nothing to support these claims.

Mystery Helicopters

Noted since the early 1970s, some mutilation cases coincided with reports of strange lights and/or suspicious low-flying helicopters in the vicinity.

Here are just a handful of those reports :

# Aug 21st 1973 around 9:00 PM Illinois — Union County :

A Mr. Peters fired two warning shots over a helicopter that was hovering low and shining a spotlight on his cattle. The chopper, described as "quiet—running” turned out its lights and disappeared.

# July 15th 1974, Monday - 5:00 PM Iowa - Pottawattamie County :

Twenty shots were fired from a black twin-engine plane and a white helicopter at Robert Smith as he cultivated a cornfield on his tractor. Neither craft was marked. Smith could see a figure brace himself against the helicopter door as he fired. Both the helicopter and the airplane had been seen over the area "all spring".

# Spring 1975 – Texas:

Multiple mutilations were occurring in the state and reports included an anonymous caller who reported he had seen a helicopter north of Tyler on Highway 271. He claimed what looked to be a calf could be seen hanging underneath it. The report was classified as "unfounded".

Winona cattle rancher, Billy Joe Davis, had suffered 3 mutilations on his property so patrolled the farm at night. In February of 1975 on successive nights he spotted a helicopter circling his land with a constant bright light underneath it. As soon as he began to approach it flew off.

# July & August 1975 – Colorado:

Numerous sightings of helicopters were reported over farmland. One even appeared to have taken a pig.

For three succeeding nights cows were found mutilated in Costilla County. On the first night, Sheriff Ernest Sandoval was patrolling a dirt road when saw a group of people surrounding a fire in a rocky area. The sheriff radioed for assistance. The suspicious group of people then ran to a nearby helicopter which left the scene hastily.

#September 22nd, - Crowley & Pueblo Counties:

A low flying helicopter ran the driver of a pickup truck off a dirt road. He called for help on his CB radio and two auxiliary policemen responded. They found the victim in a state of heavy shock. The helicopter was still hovering overhead.

One of the officers fired a shot from a 30-30 rifle that could be heard ricocheting off the chopper. A chase followed involving deputies from 3 counties, guards from the Pueblo Army Depot along with Officers of the Colorado towards Pueblo airport before it turned north and vanished.

Numerous other cases of residents being harassed by helicopters were reported along with the growing number of cattle mutilations. A hunter in Montana in 1976 reported an encounter with a landed black unmarked helicopter where the crew appeared to be of ‘Oriental’ origin. As he approached them they ran back to their helicopter and took off!

The Los Angeles Times featured a quote from Information Officer, Major Arne Anderson, at the Fort Carson Military Reservation near Colorado Springs during the peak of the mutilation/helicopter siege of 1975.

He said :

We have three helicopters, all clearly marked with large red crosses on their sides, which often fly all over Colorado on emergency rescue calls from local sheriffs. Otherwise our helicopters (about 80) do all their practice and training drills on the Army reservation. They do not leave the base unless it's to assist in a National Guard operation or to move to another military base. And, when off base, they never fly below 1800 feet. Our choppers are so controlled it's unbelievable. When not in use, they're locked 24 hours a day. And every pilot lifting off the pad must file a complete clearance report on his destination.

The reports of mystery helicopters did not stop and continued into the 1980s and beyond. If the mutilations and the helicopter mystery was not enough there was something else to contend with.

UFOs, Cattle Abductions & Mutilations

Ever since the ‘Snippy’ case in the 1960s, extra-terrestrial interference was a possibility that many considered to be behind the killings. Numerous strange lights and UFOs were seen around the times of the mutilations. The nature of the smooth clean wounds found on the animals also appeared impossible outside of a hospital surgery. Some investigators were convinced that a highly advanced technology was at work in the vivisection of the cattle. The possibility being considered was that the technology may not be our own.

Big Mama

On the 24th April 1977 a news story appeared in the Gazette Telegraph of Colorado.

A baby UFO and its “Big Mama”, a soundless, illusive flying object, have become the focal points in Logan County for a devoted audience of night time viewers. .............

Those monitoring the strange objects since their appearance in north eastern Colorado in late November include the Logan County Sheriff’s Department, which views them as a new dimension of its investigation into cattle mutilations..............

The unexplainable deaths and confirmed mutilation of 72 cattle in the county since August prompted Sheriff Harry L. “Tex” Graves to pursue every possible lead that may result in uncovering those responsible for the senseless slaughter.......

Full Text and Source : Project1947.com

Sheriff Tex Graves had noted that the lights had been seen each time a mutilation occurred and definitely felt there was a connection. ‘Big Mama’ appeared to have a white light underneath with red and green lights on either side . Sometimes a ‘baby’ UFO would break off from it at speed. Other times the lights would group and then disappear.

Capt. Keith Wolverton of the Cascade County Sheriff’s Department in Great Falls, Montana also investigated the mutilations. He reported watching ‘Big Mama’ on radar hovering at 21,000 feet. In less than 4 seconds she had moved to 44,000 feet. Something no known helicopter could achieve at the time.

Tex Graves had also found strange ‘pod ‘marks near the scene of two mutilations. They were 5’ apart, forming a triangular pattern and 7’’ across by 2½” deep and looked as though made by a round bottom plate. In the second incident the numerous marks were found north, east and west of the animal’s body, spreading out to an area as far as 50’ from it.

In the first week of August 1977 to the Southwest of Sterling, Nebraska three mutilations occurred at a feedlot. Two of the farmhands decided to conduct a stakeout. On their 2nd night they saw three human like figures traverse the feedlot fence. Although their movement was not human like and they appeared to ‘glide’ over the topography. Despite their call for assistance and the police arriving within minutes no tracks were found, no vehicles were seen, nor was there any obvious escape route as to how the ‘humanoids’ had got away. But somehow they had.

We even had reports from a Colorado Ranch where multiple paranormal events appeared to be happening. Mutilations occurred, UFOs, humanoids and even Bigfoot appeared.

FBI Involvement

As the 1970s came to a close the FBI had also been drawn into the investigations. The actual FBI documents from the time were finally released just a few years ago.

National Enquirer June 5th 1979

The files deal with a number of news reports and correspondence regarding the mutilation issue.

One investigator believed that:

"These animals are picked up by aircraft, mutilated elsewhere and returned and dropped from aircraft.
"Identical mutilations have been taking place all over the south west. Whoever is responsible is well organised with boundless technology, financing and secrecy."

A police report states:

This 11-month-old bull was dropped by some type of aircraft north of Mr Manuel Gomez's ranch house. The sex organs had been removed with a sharp and precise instrument. The bone had also been removed.

The bull sustained visible bruises around the brisket seeming to indicate that a strap was used to lift and lower the animal from the aircraft... flesh underneath the hide was pinkish in colour.

A probable explanation for the pinkish blood is a control type of radiation used to kill the animal... both the liver and the hearts were mushy. Both organs had the texture and consistency of peanut butter.

The bull had been seen alive the previous day but during the night a low-flying craft had been heard near where the remains were found. FBI agents were sent to remote farms across rural America to probe the killings.

Another incident at the Dulce farm, dated June 13, 1976, told how an odd craft visited another animal mutilation:

"A suspected aircraft of some type had landed twice, leaving three pod-marks in a triangular shape. The diameter of each pod was 14inches

An FBI document dated January, 1979, said:

"The Department of Justice advised that their criminal division has been aware of the phenomenon of animals being mutilated in a manner that would indicate such acts were performed by persons as part of a ritual or ceremony."

The Rommel Report

The FBI commissioned a study “Operation Animal Mutilation”. It was later known as the “The Rommel Report” as it had been headed by FBI agent Kenneth Rommel . Rommel had specifically been looking at cases in New Mexico.

He concluded:

During the past five years, hundreds of livestock mutilations have been reported throughout the United States. Of the states affected by this phenomenon, New Mexico has certainly had its share of unusual incidents.

Since 1975, over 100 mutilations have been reported throughout the state. Ninety mutilations were reported prior to Operation Animal Mutilation. Another 27 incidents were investigated under this year-long project, which began May 28, 1979. Twenty-five of these cases were reported as mutilations.

In each of these 25 incidents, as I have shown in Chapter Four, the rough jagged nature of the incisions together with the evidence at the scene clearly indicates that the carcass was damaged by predators and/or scavengers. In most cases, the animal had died first of natural causes.

A Strange Harvest

The 1970s were drawing to a close and the reports of mutilations seemed to be reducing. However in direct contrast to Rommel’s findings, researcher, Linda Moulton Howe had been producing a documentary from her own research.

A Strange Harvest was first released in 1980 to TV audiences in Colorado. Howe looks at the evidence and the possible causes of cattle deaths. She interviews farmers, policemen and state officials amongst others.

We see a chicken being burned by a surgical laser and cut with a scalpel to show the similarity with the injuries apparent on livestock. Howe even visits an army base to examine how ‘silent’ the quietest known military helicopters of the time actually were. One army officer declares that it is more likely ‘aliens’ were responsible for the silent copter sightings than their own hardware.

Lou Girodo, a Chief Investigator for the District Attorney in Trinidad, Colorado also considers that “creatures not of this planet” may be responsible.

The documentary ends with two witness hypnosis sessions. One comes from Wyoming farmer Patrick McGuire. He supposedly witnessed a cow being taken a aboard a UFO. Rather strangely he contradicts himself by stating the UFO is “picking up the cow” but when asked if he can see the cow says “no”.

The final part of the documentary features extensive coverage of another hypnosis session with Judy Doraty. Judy had apparently been abducted and taken aboard an extra-terrestrial spacecraft. She describes how a cow was also taken on board and how she witnessed it being mutilated.

A strange part during the hypnotic regression is when Judy describes being stood beside her car watching the strange light in the sky and simultaneously being aboard the spacecraft at the same time.

Beyond the 1970s

Whilst the peak of the mutilations happened in the 1970s the phenomena has never gone away. Farmers continue to lose their cattle. The perpetrators appear to be exempt from justice.

The explanations have also expanded. Some researchers have suggested that a mysterious ‘cryptid’ such as the chupacabra (a ‘mythical’ vampire beast) is killing the cattle and draining their blood.

In 1999 UFO researcher Phillip S Duke proposed a hypothesis that aliens have been using commercial cattle stocks to incubate and research the HIV/AIDS virus. The biological similarities between cattle and humans, he claimed, made them a logical choice for experimentation concerning human pathogens.

Then came conspiracy theories about clandestine agencies abducting the cattle. Former New Mexico state patrol officer in the Dulce, New Mexico, Gabe Valdez had been studying cases in the Dulce area since the 1970s up until he passed away in 2011. Although once suspecting it, he had never once stated that he had seen evidence pointing to extra terrestrials. However he did find military gear such as gas masks and glow sticks around the carcasses of mutilated cattle.

Valdez also believed that the UFOs seen in the area were actually advanced ‘black-op’ military craft. Craft which were involved in capturing cattle for experimenting on and later returning the corpse inconspicuously.

He claimed the animals were returned mutilated in order to make locals believe it was done by extraterrestrials.

As for the identity and motives of this secret military group, Valdez would only say it was too sensitive a matter to discuss. Although at least one of the motives appeared to be measuring the radiation levels due to to high rates of cancer in Dulce. He says as much when interviewed.

Gabe Valdez interviewed

In the 1990s we also had the strange goings on reported at Skinwalker ranch. That topic would take up a whole thread on its own.

But the people who investigated ‘Skinwalker’, NIDS (National Institute for Discovery Science) also investigated the Cattle mutilation phenomena. Their findings make interesting reading.

Unexplained Cattle Deaths and the Emergence of a Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) Epidemic in North America

Overall, the evidence suggests that animal mutilations are a long-term, covert, prion disease sampling operation by unknown perpetrators who are aware of a substantial contamination of the beef and venison food supply. Although this paper presents evidence in favor of a motive for animal mutilations, there is still insufficient evidence to identify the perpetrators..............
The primary conclusion of this paper is that the animal mutilation epidemic of 1970-2003 was and is a monitoring operation for an infectious agent that is spreading through the human food chain (cattle, sheep and wild & farmed deer/elk). In North America (Canada and United States) the infection comprises a full-blown CWD epidemic in deer and elk and a sub-clinical BSE infection in cattle. The infectious agent, unlike all known viruses and bacteria, is almost indestructible and the symptoms in people appear very difficult to diagnose pre-mortem.

In short this TSE agent is the perfect stealth killer. If the hypothesis is correct, animal mutilation operations are carried out by a knowledgeable group that is cognizant of the biochemistry and infectious potential of prion diseases and their fatal spread.

Source : NIDS - TES Paper

Beef production in the USA alone is somewhere around 25 billion pounds a year. Milk production reaches something like 23 billion gallons per annum. Now I am not pointing a finger at any corporation or government agency. The stats are simply there to illustrate how important the cattle industry is to the global economy and our own diets.

There is, quite literally, much food for thought there.

Of course many believe that cattle mutilation is all down to predators, insects and natural decomposition. National Geographic put a video together to show how a dead cow decomposes over time.

The problem here was that the cow was already dead when they started filming.

So for many the mystery remains - who is doing the killing and why?

Now anyone want to chew over the fat?

I don't doubt the evidence that this happens, and I also find it a great mystery as to the peculiar nature of the remains of these animals.

I just find it hard to believe that beings that developed technology to travel many light years across the universe, did so to remove the anus from a cow.

I believe it is a harvest of genetic material by Interdimensional beings that do NOT have our best interests at heart.

A lot of effort put into this thread. Very interesting, thank you! S&F

After looking into this "Endangered Species" was a movie that Linda Moulton Howe was asked if she would permit the movie makers to use her title and for certain witness testimony from her "Strange Harvest" documentary to feature in the movie.

She apparently declined and felt vindicated by her decision.

Could we have been harvesting something found within the cow and then stopped after learning to create it synthetically? The Database of Cattle Mutilations stops in 2009 which I find strange. Was this the last known mutilation?

I think it's a genuine mystery but may have more than one solution. These kind of cattle mutilations are nowhere near as common in Europe. Although they do happen.

It could well be that many cattle deaths really do have a simple, prosaic explanation. But some of them are related to the post-atomic world we live in.

Great thread mirageman, thanks for posting. I'd be interested to hear your personal conclusions about the phenomenon? You obviously know quite a lot. Do you think it has anything to do with ET?

A while back I heard about a strange more recent case (1999) where multiple witnesses reported seeing a UFO lifting an elk off the ground...

A team of forestry workers allegedly had been witness to an incident on Thursday, February 25, 1999, during which time an elk was lifted off the ground and carried away by a very peculiar, disc-shaped object.

You know before I looked into it I really thought there was not much at all to it. If you try to find some real information on the web you really have to dig to get to any real specifics about cases linking UFOs to cattle mutilations. A simple search will give you 10,000+ results. But most of them are the same old stories rinsed and repeated. Not only that most of the 'mutilations' seemed to be concentrated in certain areas of the world.

I find it hard to believe that aliens would travel all the way from wherever and continually harvest cattle for 40+ years. I don't find it as hard to believe that human beings might want to test the 'food chain' in areas where nuclear weapons were tested years ago.

I'll leave you with that thought and resume tomorrow (or actually later today) as it's long past midnight here in Europe

Another well-researched and put together thread my friend! You set the bar high.....

Just a couple of quick points on my own take on cattle mutilations......

1. Forget about these as being from predators. Most of the stories/investigations/research in fact almost all begins with farmers and ranchers. I'm am not one but count many friends and relatives who are. They have seen many carcasses caused by all variations of coyotes, wild dogs, wolves, bears, cougars and occasionally people. They are used to these incidents and recognize them. They get freaked out when carcasses appear to be far from the norm, with things like small precision laser-like cuts, all blood drained from the body, no blood at all on the ground, only specific organs/glands removed, no tracks of any kind apart from the herd around the carcass, and others MM mentioned above.

2. There is evidence of these mutilations going back many decades, even before 1900.

3. It appears army equipment has been deliberately left behind at some sites to confuse the issue.

4. At most times cows can be bought fairly cheaply, so for the army or some corporation to divert personnel and obtain specialized equipment such as medium lift helicopters and partake in illegal activity just to steal and especially RETURN cows just does not make sense in any way. There can be no logical sense in any economic or any other way for it. If they want to test for mad cow they can just go to any ranch any time and take samples, practically, if they have some decent cause for suspicion. Anyway, many of these cases happened in the 1960's and 1970's before anyone had heard of mad cow or at least before people started worrying about it. The only reason the army would have to do it would be to discredit genuine ET mutilations, thus I believe both have happened, but probably more of the latter.

Do you think the coyote brought his knife?

Lion with targeted parts taken in Africa. Don't think it was poachers, they don't usually go after lions, nor do they take only half the head. And what could cut the head so cleanly in the field? They brought a band saw with them? And zero blood on the ground???

OK. Now let someone drag out that silly video capture of the guy saying it was ETs!

Wait! It was ETs and it was us. In order to explain that, I need to drag out that worn explanation that the whole business in the ETs acting to help humanity and to do that they are interested in every aspect of our lives from not starting nuke wars to not killing ourselves in other ways. The evidence is overwhelming, the ETs are doing the bulk of the activities and covert operations by the US government is doing their share to aid their own hidden investigations of what is suggested herein.

I'm going to take a roundabout way to support this thread. Back in the 1970's as cattle mutations were making headlines, there surfaced a story about a Kansas farmer that awoke one night to hear a calf bawling. It roped around the neck with one hoof caught in a fence. The other end of the rope went up into a hovering UFO. The story caught on like wildfire. But it was false. I and another UFO investigator working unknowingly and independently proved that the story was a hoax. --I frequently had then and yet today have to explain that newspapers back in those days wrote tall tales to please their readers that had nothing else to read. Samuel Clements (Mark Twain) was one of those newspaper reporters. I also have shown that a UFO crash at Urbana, Illinois, in the late 1880s was also a hoax as probably even was the one in Texas involving Judge Proctor's windmill in Texas. Such stories added important content to those early days of mass newspapers enabled by the fairly new service of telegraphs rapidly transmitting info across the country.

However, back to the calf caught in the fence story: Fabrications frequently have some basis of truth in them. And the once-to-us wild story of the 1880s calf abduction--even more wild in the late 1880s is an indication that some of that business was actually happening back then but got passed around as folk stories to eventually appear as a specific story. In effect, the twisted tales of the mythology of the UFO is not a new phenomena.

Take what you will from all of the old evidences, but rest assured the reality of the existence of ETs and even their presence at our planet is increasingly hard to ignore or deny. Deny ignorance.
