Yeah. Those numbers are real. A total of 111 people were killed by police in the United States in March of 2015. Since 1900, in the entire United Kingdom, 52 people have been killed by police.

The gang related I get, but the so called accidental
killings of unarmed citizens, not so much.

Especially them blowing away small children on playgrounds
who look like they had a gun.

12 year old shot dead two seconds after cops arrive

Last time there was a high profile shooting in London there were riots across the UK...

With us or against us...

They found out they don't have the man power to shoot us down for nothing.

Media is the worst...

They showed pictures of the pig's victim in a light that painted him as a thug where he looked "angry"...

Turns out it was a face of heartbreak at his baby daughter's grave which they'd zoomed in on for the "thug look"!!!

Media wouldn't do that???

Really...

Scumbag pigs & scumbag media can't predict a riot though!

I am not defending us cops... Just want to get that out there.

But a straight up comparison seems a bit wrong, as of right now Texas and California together have about the same population of Britain.

Seems a larger population will require a larger police force which will involve more shootings.

Also places like Chicago screw up the numbers badly.

That said yes I have a problem with the quick trigger fingers of many cops today.

Britain has roughly a sixth the population of the US. It's easy to do some basic maths and figure it out. Lets say for arguments sake that the US cops kill more folk in a month than British cops do in say, 17 years.

It still looks appalling.

I agree, I am trying to find a reputable site for statistics... So far police fatal shootings are somewhere in the 60 to 80 range in Chicago alone in 2015 from what I've read.

This has already been attempted, I live in Chicago, the numbers in this are 300 million in the US, 1000 in the US are shot by police in one year. I don't feel like searching to make a link to the thread, but it was already showed that almost all of them were criminals some were suicide by cop. As I've said I live in Chicago , with crime as bad as it is I'm surprised that the numbers aren't higher. Your attempt to rehash this topic in the way you did is pretty sad.

Yes that is true, but 1200 times as much lethal shootings as the UK ?

I think even counting the larger population here, we don't have
1,200 times the people as the UK ?

They have 65 million, we have 320 million, so I'd expect maybe
5 times the citizens killed by cops, but it is WAY beyond 5 times,
It is over 1,200 times in a time frame of 1200 months vs. 1 month.

I will also admit I know some good cops, but I will also say I know
some that have no business being cops either.

Such as the one that tazered a 86 year old grandmother in a
nursing home because she had "aggressive posture" in the bed ?!?!?

86 year old bed ridden grandmother tasered for agressive posture in bed

Another instance a cop choked out an ambulance driver who
had a heart attack victim in the back for speeding... I kid you not.

Hwy patrol chokes out ambulance driver with patient enroute

Apparently they now screen to hire the insane, because this nut job
has no business having a gun or the damn badge.

There's a lot of culture at play here too. UK cops have armed response teams who travel in specialist vehicles where they can store handguns in a lockable centre console. They need to be called and given permission to open fire unless directly under threat or a civilian is directly under threat. There are no trigger-happy cowboys discharging weapons and every time a bullet is fired they have an investigation.

In the majority of cases, UK police have the benefit of time. They can stand back, discuss and weigh up options.

This wouldn't work in the States with an armed populace and where many police are as scared of those they protect as the civilians are of them.

This is just my opinion of course but:

It seems like police encounters have a heightened sense of threat, be that real or imagined. This feeds into the expectations of the police. Being ready for anything means in any 50/50 situation where uncertainty reigns its the cop deciding he /she isn't taking the risk.

__________

I used to think that U.S gun culture was terrible etc. etc. - but I now believe the 'genie is out of the bottle' you better protect yourself as nobody is removing all the guns so .... tool up.

But ... there are consequences and this is one of them.

The cop defense crew has responded in force.

They need to use less then lethal options.

I guess they save those for 86 year old bed ridden grandmothers...

He did not deserve to be shot. But don’t portray him as some angel.

That day he did go out to buy a gun.
sure he threw it away before the police wrongfully shot him.

But he did buy a gun in the first place.

I'm not rehashing anything I posted an opinion..and certain areas of the country make using the nation wide numbers disingenuous in my opinion.

I lived 10 years in an oklahoma town that had 1 fatal officer shooting in that time... The cop was found at fault and went to jail.

it is certainly not a massive problem in every corner of the country like some people here like to paint it as.

Until the people in the areas with high police involved fatal shootings put pressure and keep pressure on the police nothing will change.
Most people seem to lose interest as soon as a tax increase is looked at to improve training.

Actually more then 1,000 a year are shot, its 1,000 a year that are killed.

Over 1,000 US citizens killed by police in 2014

I do like how the writer tells us not to bother adjusting the numbers for any reason, and to only use the numbers in the manner he wishes them to be used. Solid

Also like how he then goes on to make it sound like every last person killed is unarmed and on their way to bible study. Also solid

That all out of the way: Yes, it is a problem. Yes, too many people are being killed, and at an alarming rate.

Well Australia was the penal colony from the UK so it would
make sense that they might be a bit more violent down there.

Good Lord that is kind of shocking to read?
Imagine adding the wild wild west days numbers.

I'm not sure if any studies have been done on this? Poor police recruiting and training, corruption, Poor policies, incorrect procedures to disarm a situation. Trigger happy peeps we yanks are.

Same here. I wouldn't ever want the US gun culture here in the UK. At the same time, it is what it is in the States and I'd own a gun if I lived there.

Cultures are different across the world and it's often foolish to compare two and say one is the best.
