I just wanted to see if I could do it, no pressure. And I keep the scar as a reminder that pain is only in the mind. I'm sure I could take more, but I'm not in the mood to strap electrodes to my balls and nipples and flay myself alive.

As for eternal pain, there is no such thing. If it is going to last forever, there will be no reason for pain when you cannot change your predicament. You might as well sit back and enjoy it as a hot bath.

Immortality would be a much worse fate

24 hour television screening reruns of The Young and the Restless, would be close to actual torment. But worse would be having to listen constantly to Lenard Cohen albums, he make this world feel like hell.

My worst idea of Hell is that: A) it actually exists and, B) the actions in this life have a direct bearing on your eternal existence.

"I've always feared mutiliation. The only thing I could think of that's worse is being forced to watch as the ones I care about are put through pain and torture (mental or physical) and I am not able to do anything about it..."

I feel ya! Like that scene in Casino, where Joe Pesci has to watch those guys beat the life out of his brother with baseball bats for a few hours, and he knows that he is next, and can't do anything to stop it.

Just remembering that thinking it doesn't necessarily make it so!
