Although you raise some good points I would also ask you to consider a couple things.
1. You chose to live where the regulations are strict.
2. You chose an upscale neighborhood full of 250k dollar houses to live in.
Move to a state with less population, cheaper property, cheaper houses and live off the grid if you want to.
I bought my original property here in Arizona for 95k and it has 2 houses on it so I have one to live in and another for a rental unit.
I have my own well so the water is free, my own septic system and if I choose I can run my house totally off solar or gen power and NOT be hooked up
to the "grid".
I agree most places have far, far too many regulations but on the other hand you can chose where to live and how to live.
