Thousands flee as Mayon spews lava...... Philippines

It does seem that volcanic activity has been on the increase these last couple of years ?

The majestic Mayon, the Philippines\' most active volcano near Legazpi City, Albay, spewed huge lava fragments rolling down its slopes in an ongoing gentle eruption that has prompted authorities to evacuate thousands of villagers, including farm animals and pets, Manila Bulletin reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Alert Level 3 in Mayon – the third highest alert in a five-step scale – as it warned of a possible “hazardous eruption” within weeks. Phivolcs science research specialist Eric Arconado said the last time the alert status was raised to level 3 was in December 14, 2009.

Nope, there has always been a lot volcanic activity, now its actually quiet. Mayon is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It has erupted ~50 times during last 400 years. Current activity continues from 2013. Good that Mayon is not very large, its largest eruption has been VEI-4 and now it only shows minor activity with VEI-0. Even though its not large, its dangerous as people live very close to it and it has caused deadly mudslides.
