That is much cooler than those Windows Media player visualizations.
I don't understand whats making the sound; is it a synth plugged into it? Is it the device itself? Is the electricity mirroring the sound, as in the Windows visualization? Or is the current creating the notes?

I believe it may be creating the frequencies itself, plasma arc tweeter. At one time(80s) you could a set of high end speakers with plasma arc tweeters that produced high frequency signals and blue plasma, too long ago to remember what range. I believe they produced ozone and went off the market

Actually I found some current production home audio speakers with a plasma tweeter..they glow purple apparently, here is a link for anyone interested..its related to the op I think..I hope

I can imagine Mickey Hart using this on an album.

If anyone ever gets the chance, his book Songcatchers about early music recorders and traditional world music is fascinating. I highly recommend it.
