Can't even do a good thing anymore...not even for free.

Sure feels great to pick on a 9 yr old kid right? Share the gift of a good book? Not anymore.

Disgusting.

Spencer's vision for his little free library was for people to “get into reading, get to know your neighbors, and just make new, meet new people, make friends.” But the city warned the family with a notice to stop, actually claiming that "the little house" is an accessory structure, buildings that aren't attached to the house. A building? Would it help if it was shaped like a shoe? Poor Spencer thought he could get around the law by attaching a rope from the house to the box.

This truly sounds like a Washington statement actually.

As in most cases like these, the shut down is said to stem from mysterious anonymous "complaints." In this case, one wonders... But of course, the complaint that the city so ardently must put right can only have a basis if there is an existing ordinance.

Not much bigger than a fancy mail box.

What a sham its just a little boy, and who the hell and why would anyone complain, two complaints, about what blocking traffic or just some old people that get pissy when people do things they dont like. Maybe he should start promoting peace and liberty music where all of him and his friends sit on the front yard listening to head phones or start having book readings. Give em hell Kiddo!!!

Lemonade stands have been shut down numerous times in the US.

No sarcasm to end.

I know I was being sarcastic with my first comment about it, lemonade stands, car washes, and now free libraries. In my home town we had a skate park the city let us build and then when built took it away then let the YMCA build one that you had to pay to play and you could only do it when "they" decide to stay open. It just keeps telling me that the world really does want the kids to stay indoors on video games and out of the busy lives of the adult public for they might actually become neighborly and grow healthy etc etc etc. Pisses me off this is happening and it is a shame no mention of what other parents that had kids involved in swapping books think/ feel about this.

Perhaps if the council persons who issued the warning, had read a little more themselves, they would understand the fact that law applied for its own sake is nothing more than bureaucracy, and has no value. Only law which supports justice should be applied across the board, and I can think of few examples of a more laudable and just goal than assisting the education of citizens by installing this little library, back in its original place.

Maybe the counsel complained because there was a "law book for dummies" contained within so they panicked thinking they are going to be outvoted if all these kids are all of a sudden interested in law forcing mom and dad to get more proactive and then eventually calling out the scum on what they are when present. (sorry my wild imagination again)

I would say "what a joke!" but, it's not really funny.

It's quite sad actually.

Having said that, I have a feeling that this kid will figure out a way to do what he wants to do.

Best of luck to him.

Like Washington:

Anonymous, unnamed sources etc

Can't get caught if there is no one to question, challenge or confirm right?

Its about education!!!

Go find out about Common Core and you'll see why he's been stopped.
Common Core prevents parents from helping children with their education. They even have notices in schools that tell the kids that getting information from elsewhere will NOT get them better grades!

Common Core "education" scares the crap out of me. It is not good...not at all and, I wonder why it hasn't become a bigger issue amongst parents.

Do they truly understand?

My guess is....no!

Common Core has to GO!

I read earlier this week that Gov. Jindel got rid of it in his state.....Good for him!

It's a dumbing down of our society on a massive scale! It has to go!

I don't know if the kid is affiliated, but there is a worldwide Little Free Library movement (littlefreelibrary.org...) which has close to 20,000 libraries. I have one on front of my house. It's about the size of a large mailbox. The idea is that anyone can take a book. Anyone can donate a book. There are no fees, no overdues, no dates due. We're on a busy route because both the public bus and the school bus let off on our street, which is also a frequent route for joggers and dog walkers. It's very busy/

Some grinch of a neighbor complained obviously.
They should put it up on their patio, then I don't think there's anything the city can do about it.

Hope OP doesn't mind. I think its connected.

The sound is awful, but what this guy presents concerning Common Core is terrifying! And it explains why they dont want kids setting up libraries!

I have a feeling it wasn't a neighbor but rather someone in City Hall that took personal insult to THEIR law that they probably voted for or even created..

When its a corrupt city counsel stepping on citizens rights why don't citizens take this issue up and vote them out unles a list of things are changed ASAP?

And be so much in their face in the interim with alot of networking so that they probably would cave in before the elections.

I certainly don't think parents should teach children to accept unjust rules made up by bullies.

A little note on the common core post, they certainly don't want parents to know what they're teaching the kids, and that is why parents need to look over all the course and work material and insist their children cough it up.

I don't really have the time or inclination to watch a 2 hour video but I'm assuming I already know the gist of the conversation when it comes to our country's "new education model".

It's a joke!

Parent's become obsolete in the education of their own children and the school system is the only way OUR children can become "truly" educated.

They know best right? The government knows our children better than we do as parents....therefore, the public school system is the only way our children could possibly become educated.

Well...I disagree and I am taking the necessary steps to make sure they don't fall into that bull crap trap!

Agreed, but the problem is the course work has been designed so that the parents cant understand it! In the vid I posted it talks about parents who were utterly unable to understand what the children were being taught. Common Core ensures that ONLY the school can teach dumb the children, and thats why they stamp on things like the kid in the op who wanted to share books.
