Not much has changed since the last time these statistics were released showing the numbers for 2011. Breitbart reported on the latest stats from the FBI:

With newer crime statistics now out for 2012, Breitbart News can report that more people are killed each year with fists and hammers than are killed with rifles or shotguns.

According to the FBI, there were a total of 625 murders committed with rifles and shotguns in 2012. That breaks down to 322 murders that were rifle related and 303 that were shotgun related.

The total number of deaths committed with fists, hammers, and other blunt objects was 1,196. That breaks down to 518 murders related to hammers and blunt objects and 678 related to fists.

Taken together, the rate of murder by fists and hammers was nearly 100 percent higher than the rate of murder by rifles or shotguns.

The hand gun statistic was not included obviously.. However it is interesting that the demonetization of long guns is always the hot topic... Living overseas we can own a pistol and can even buy a .22 rifle.. Nothing of a larger caliber in a rifle.. Pistols are whatever you can afford and are 3 to 4 times more expensive than the states; ammo is out of sight price wise.. Keeps the riff raft (not-very-well-off-money-wise) from owning, however the well off can pretty much afford and do whatever.. Why? Government/military will always seek the advantage in fire power. Just an observation from my part of the world right or wrong.

And Breitbart once again spins the facts to support his preferred narrative. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about "uninfringed" gun ownership...

...but we don't need this guy's "help". Breitbart has a transparent political agenda in almost every story produced, which are invariably manipulated in a manner which leads me to believe he must think we're all stupid.

I suppose he's partly right. I can hear the NRA dupes chanting "told ya so" already, when the implied conclusions drawn from these statistics are completely unfounded and therefore meaningless.

Umm you talk about Andrew Breitbart as if he is alive.
He has been dead for some time now.
Like two years dead.

Oops.

Doesn't seem to have affected "their" perspective on things, nor the validity of what I wrote.

RIP, Drew. Sorry, man.

Your numbers really make a different point than the article.

well it's quite clear you have no idea what "their" perspective is.
so what you wrote has no validity whatsoever.

Exactly however the point of the article IMO was to point out the much demonized long guns such as the AR or anything painted in black or even a shotgun falls behind hammers and fist.. Shootings have been on a decline as per the statistics show yet, unless one looked at the official counts, who could guess so ?

So they're not manipulating facts to support their preferred narrative?

If someone wants to kill someone else, they do not need a gun, as this data shows. Guns do not affect the crime rate for this reason. If guns were illegal the criminals wouldn't say "aww, dang, I guess we can't do that crime now." No way. They would either procure guns illegally or just use another weapon. The statistic I would be interested in is that which shows how many crimes were stopped by firearms.

Depending on which reference you want to use crimes are stopped by showing/using a gun somewhere between 750,000 and 1.2 million every year in the states. The numbers are vague because those who have to pull a gun to stop a B.G. are not always reported. Anyway those are the figures I saw last year.
