I would start at the XDA Developers site and go from there. Search for your phone make and model. If there is any confusion, usually the REAL phone information is under the battery where you find model and serial numbers. Read what they have, see if you can follow the instructions and if you have the tools, which is usually just a PC, USB connection, USB cable that may have come with the phone, Phone USB driver for the PC, etc.

If you don't understand something ask. I am quite sure that one of us can help walk you through the process either in a real time chat or Skype. Or if you know the phone model and version, I can grab the link, post it and you can go from there.
