Close enough. Soviet "butterfly" mine deployed in Afghanistan in the 80's. Part of a class of mine called a Whatsit. (appropriate for this thread).

In other words you saw it on the ground, wondered, "what is that?" and stoop to pick it up…

Thats evil.

They made it look weird for no other reason that people might be interested. Definitely very evil.

I thought claymore-ish, but there was no mechanical reason for its shape. Maybe it just fit in the cluster bomb better or somthing.


It says on this site that some self destruct after 24 hours, thats actually pretty responsible as far and land mines go.

Yes insidious, as land mines usually are. These were in fact deployed from the air and the wing shape (hence the name "Butterfly") let them flutter to the ground dispersing over a wide area. Impact with the ground set a delay arm and any disturbance after that…

Afghan "goat herders" took to putting their goats on stilts to prevent loss of limbs. The charge is small and liquid and designed to wound, not kill.
