"On Thursday morning, President Barack Obama signed an executive order which designated the ongoing crisis in Ukraine prompted by a Russian military invasion of the Crimean Peninsula “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
The order allows the administration to impose visa restrictions on Russians and Crimeans which are identified as threats to Ukraine’s security or territorial integrity. The order also paves the way for the imposition of sanctions on individuals the government determines are responsible for “undermining democratic processes or institutions in Ukraine.”
Obama signed this order because he has to look like he is doing something but cannot in fact succeed either with a military intervention or wide-scale sanctions.

On Thursday morning, President Barack Obama signed an executive order which designated the ongoing crisis in Ukraine prompted by a Russian military invasion of the Crimean Peninsula “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (Reuters) - Crimea's parliament voted to join Russia on Thursday and its Moscow-backed government set a referendum on the decision in 10 days' time in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula.
The sudden acceleration of moves to bring Crimea, which has an ethnic Russian majority and has effectively been seized by Russian forces, formally under Moscow's rule came as European Union leaders held an emergency summit groping for ways to pressure Russia to back down and accept mediation.

Of course they know.

I don't think executive orders have to be allowed by anybody but the President.

The question needs to be asked: what WOULD you have the U.S. do? Bomb the Russians? Land troops in the Ukraine? Provide materiel assistance? What exactly? It's really easy to armchair-quarterback this and dis everything but a lot more difficult to provide a meaningful alternative. So, if what is (or isn't being done) is, in your opinion, wrong or insufficient, lay it on me. What's YOUR plan?
The Crimean PEOPLE have just voted to join Russia….what justification is there for slapping sanctions on Russia?
