The UN has unanimously agreed to, and adopted a resolution to aid Syrian civilians, while demanding that both major parties allow access to those in need. The deal was organised by Australia, Jordan and Luxembourg, which together, successfully secured the support of Russia and China:

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution co-authored by Australia condemning the Syrian government for starving its citizens and demanding both warring parties allow immediate access to millions of civilians in urgent need of aid.

After weeks of intense diplomacy led by Australia’s UN Ambassador, Gary Quinlan, and his counterparts from Jordan and Luxembourg, negotiators managed to secure the support of Syria’s ally Russia, which along with China had vetoed three previous resolutions.

To secure Russian and Chinese support negotiators softened the language of an earlier draft, removing the direct threat of sanctions from the resolution and a specific mention of the International Criminal Court.

You do realize that Australia is now the presiding in the UN security council. As an Australian, I would be concerned what that means for us in the future.

How about we be happy for the people of Syria on this one.

Obviously China and Russia see the UN for what it is and have been blocking resolutions because they have too much of an agenda. It would seen that Australia has done something good for the people that are in desperate need here by convincing everyone to find an agreeable solution.
