Mark Thatcher, son of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has been charged by prosecuters from Equatorial Guinea regarding an alleged plot to 'take over' the West African nation. Prosecuters claim Thatcher was mainly involved with partially financing the coup. He is among nineteen others, all accused mercenaries to be charged regarding the coup attempt.

The coup plotters intended to force out the 25 year regime of President Teodoro Obiang and install an exiled opposition figure as a figurehead leader for Africa's No.3 oil producer, Equatorial Guinea claims.

The alleged plot was exposed in March by South African intelligence services, and scores of accused mercenaries were arrested in Malabo and in Zimbabwe.

The documents allege meetings between Mr Thatcher, famed British mercenary Simon Mann and British financier Greg Wales, the report said.

Mark Thatcher has a somewhat dubious past including being rescued during the
1982 Paris-Dakar Rally. More importantly, questions have been raised about his
relationship with the Sultan of Brunei, arms sales to Saudi Arabia and offshore
bank accounts alleged to hold 60m. All in all, not bad for someone who flunked
his accountancy exams three times.

The coup was thwarted some months ago, I guess it took a while to find out if they'd even be able to hold and charge him. One wouldn't think that this sort of adventurism goes on these days, certainly not invloving people from entire other world cultures. Yet, there it is, entire nations up for the taking by determinied individuals. Chandragupta, Alexander, Mark Thatcher? Well, thats a bit of a hyperbole, but the sentiment remains.

This is just the same kinda thing the British and American governments have been doing in secrecy and continue to try to this very day. Powerful countries and politicians have always tried to interfere in other countries politics for their own ends, its no suprise to me that wealth businessmen have the same idea. Personally I think Mark Thatcher is a pathetic little nobody with dellusions of grandeur, he deserves everything he gets for this and momma aint gonna save him now.

This gets more interesting by the day...

Mr Thatcher is accused of stumping up $US275,000 ($351,900), while Lebanese oil tycoon Eli Calil is alleged to have contributed $US750,000 ($959,700). Both deny any involvement.

A number of British businessmen are also named in the list handed out in the Malabo court, including a J H Archer. He is alleged to have provided $US240,000 ($307,100) to the coup plotters.

Disgraced British politician and best-selling novelist Jeffrey Archer, who spent time behind bars for perjury and perverting the course of justice in relation to a libel case, denied any links to the case. His middle initial is H.
