In a plan that has been described as "NAFTA on steroids," senior business and political leaders are considering a plan to virtually eliminate
borders between the US, Canada and Mexico for security reasons and to also compete with the EU. The plan calls for a continent-wide, customs-free zone
with a common currency and common approach to trade, energy, immigration, law enforcement and security. Backed in full by all three governments, a
tri-national task force panel which reports directly to the Council on Foreign Relations includes former Liberal Party deputy prime minister John
Manley, former governor of Massachusetts William Weld, and Pedro Aspe, a former Mexican finance minister. The plan apparently carries the blessings of
Tom Ridge, the Secretary of Homeland Security. A report concerning the matter will be issued this coming spring.

WASHINGTON North American national borders would be virtually eliminated under plans being considered by senior business and political leaders from
Canada, the United States and Mexico for a "NAFTA-plus," continent-wide, customs-free zone with a common approach to trade, energy, immigration, law
enforcement and security.
A tri-national task force, chaired by former Liberal Party deputy prime minister John Manley, with the full backing of all three governments, is
plotting the roadmap for this new, bolder alliance meant to compete with the European Union. William Weld, former governor of Massachusetts and Pedro
Aspe, former Mexican finance minister, join Manley on the panel that reports directly to the Council on Foreign Relations.
The mission has the formal blessing of Tom Ridge, U.S. Homeland Security secretary, who is close with President Bush.

Wow. Now this would really be something that will no doubt carry with it a whole lot of controversy. On the other hand, maybe it is a great idea, as
we would stand to benefit greatly from increased economic resources and security, and be able to compete easier with the EU. Resources and manpower
currently allocated to defending and protecting the borders could be redirected into other necessary areas. Very interesting and presented to
encourage discussions among ATS members!
