Once upon a time there was a boy who could fly.
Spending his time playing with the clouds, and drifting in the sky.
Floating quietly along with gossamer wings
He tried to learn songs from the birds, how beautiful they sing.

He was young, strong and handsome without a care in the world!
Soaring all his days like an eagle, this prince of the air!
Faster than the wind was he, with his wings unfurled!
And in the sky he ruled unchallenged, as no one would dare!

One day he spied a village so he drifted down for a closer look…

He found beings that appeared much like him but without lovely wings.
They wandered the streets of this town below
Buying clothing and food and other strange things.
But their faces were sad and their eyes were shallow.

So as they looked up and gazed at him in wonder…
They soon grew jealous, frightened, and shouted at him like THUNDER!
"COME DOWN FROM THERE YOU STUPID BOY" they cried!
"YOU ARE NOT MEANT TO FLY! LIKE A BIRD" they all lied!
THEY SCREAMED "YOU WORTHLESS CREATIONAL BLUNDER!"
Throwing stones till he fell, and they tore him asunder!
Ripping off his wings and continued to yell!
Brought him down from the heavens to live in their Hell!

As he lay there looking up toward his perfect sky… cold, dark and bleeding
A girl took pity upon the poor boy and threw herself across his broken soul.
Their horrible torture, ended thanks to her pleading
Unable to move and too weak to talk he was no longer whole.

"I once had wings like you" she whispered to his ear
I also flew as high and I had no fear!
But they too pulled me down from my cloud…
And crushed my wonderful wings, that I was so proud!

She held him tight trying to mend his broken wings.
She tried wax and plaster tied them on with strings.
She cried loudly when they fell to ground in vain.
For his spirit was also broken, knowing he would never fly again!

He tried thanking her with a half smile
Just staring at this new beauty for a long while
Then he sat up upon the hill with his wings torn apart
Was it all just a dream, he had kept in his heart...?

The man awoke with a shudder as a tear rolled down his cheek
He felt the weight of earth again how had he become so weak?
Slowly getting up from his bed he showered, got dressed.
Ready to face another day he would surly detest…

Passing by the mirror caught his reflection looking so forlorn
He thought of wings, of beauty, of flying and strings,
He thought of love, of hate and such silly things.
Then got in his car and headed to work in the dark bitter morn..

This poem is a spiritual predecessor to the short story Puddle and was written a few years prior.

Stop it. You are going to make me cry. S&F

*sniff*

No. It's nothing. Just got something stuck in my eye...
M'fine. Really.

Poems should evoke emotion, otherwise they are just words...

Well, yes. Emotions have been evoked. So, well done, sir.

*sniff*

So, don't stop (in opposition to my earlier, silly statement) - I prefer to feel than the alternative...

peace,
AB

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word 'bit'. It was an emotionally sad poem. At first it was happy and he was free...then he was called names and beaten down physically and mentally...I did tear up, I guess I should have mentioned that. I felt really sorry for him and the girl who had lost her wings too...and it just hit close to home I guess. Words can bring you down when you are flying high.

Thanks for sharing it. I wrote a dark poem the other day but not sure if I wanna share yet

Good day to you friend.

Not only did I read it all the way through but I read it more than once
lol
But seriously....that was as beautiful as it was sad.I suspect I will find it very haunting long after I have read it. It say's much about the human condition.
Thank you for sharing it.
