dunno.. they managed to sneak in these missiles to the canal.
Imagine if they planned to detonate something... huge... here!
Trade, Export, Import, FUEL... economies would take most of the shock wave.

They'd have gotten away with it!

You make him sound like a scooby doo villain! :-D

It is slightly un-nerving it was attempted, but It wouldnt surprise me if they got caught intentionally. That way they dont actually have to detonate anything but still give the illusion of intent.

I still think Kim is all mouth and no trousers :-)

Good find. OP! I just heard this on the radio on my way to work this morning.

I'm not surprised N. Korea is trying to get missile tech. They have to either figure out how to make them fly or start calling their missiles 'submarines' because they all seem to end up in the ocean.

This just shows how significant the Panama Canal is....can't wait to hear the spin.

what appeared to be ballistic missiles

N. Korea-bound ship carrying 'weapons of war' hidden in brown sugar raided in Panama

Hmmm......

Just wondering why Cuba would have those?

Also............

He said the ship had been caught before for trafficking narcotics and small arms ammunition. It was stopped in 2010 in the Ukraine and was attacked by pirates 400 miles off the coast of Somalia in 2009.

NK is playing a dangerous game. I also await to see what spins its way out of this developing story.

If this is all legit, it sure leaves some BIG questions to be answered.

* Did Cuba supply the "equipment" to NK?
* Did someone plant said "equipment" to make an excuse for another war?
* What happens now?
* What was the planned purpose for the "equipment"?

I'm sure there are many questions I didn't think of as well...

Wow, I just heard about this today and was about to make a thread about it but found this one instead.

Panama is my hometown, I work like 1km away from the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal... If a detonation happens here, the canal, panama city, everything goes to hell.. scary to even think about it.

Not much has been heard on local news here, just on La Prensa newspaper, and a few mentions on local tv news, without going into too much detail.

Wonder if this will lead to another cuban 'missile crisis'.

Cuba and NK has close ties who know what else is being smuggled there oh say like

NUKES!.

This should be a wake up call to people instead of people crying 'How NK just wants to get along'.

It would be destructive, but then again, the Chinese are rip-roaring to go on their canal in Nicaragua:

www.washingtontimes.com...

North Korea wouldn't dare touch that.

Worst case scenario, Cuba takes out Florida... Wouldn't be the worst thing to happen

The real questions to ask right now IMHO are these: was this the main threat or one of the contingencies? How many other attempts were made? Where are they?

Even I, an average citizen with no special training, would deploy multiple attack teams from multiple angles over enemy lines if I decided to strike. North Korea is a heavily militarized country so they must have thought of that as well.

Why would N. Korea move cargo on ships flying their own flag in the first place? I see ships crewed by all Americans flying all kinds of other flags.

*sigh* it's N. Korea though, they did claim to have found a "unicorn cave" a while back.

It appears to be an SA-2 surface to air missile system (or parts of it). Wow. Really sophisticated there. The SA-2 is what shot down Francis Gary Powers' U-2 over the Soviet Union in 1960. The part shown in the pictures appears to be part of the SNR-75 Fan Song radar system.

Ahhh Zaphod, you make my day when it comes to military hysteria. I'm not trying to take away from the fact, weapons components were confiscated how ever I feel it is necessary to quell the ongoing Nuclear hysteria this thread stinks of.

The wording of source articles does make it sound like they are directly claiming Ballistic weapons, or parts there of which simply does not look to be the case from the images provided.

#1 fan,

Jinx.
