The beleaguered Iraqi Police, launched a surprise attack on insurgents killing 25. The attack took place at a checkpoint the insurgents has set up in the town of Latifiyah south of Baghdad.

LATIFIYAH, Iraq - Police launched a surprise attack on an insurgent checkpoint south of Baghdad, killing 25 militants, authorities said Monday.

Some 60 police officers from the city of Hillah, dressed in civilian clothing, ambushed the militants in the Latifiyah area early Sunday, said an officer with the Babil provincial police force, who declined to give his name.

During a fierce gunbattle that lasted for several hours, 25 insurgents were killed, he said. Iraqi forces reported no casualties.

Coalition and Iraqi forces have come under frequent attack in Latifiyah, about 20 miles south of the capital.

About 60 police officers dressed in civilian clothes ambushed the insurgents and the gun battle lasted for several hours. No police casualties were noted. Latifiyah is a hotbed for insurgent activities and both Iraqi police and coalition forces have been attacked there.

Is this the first time the Iraqis have used the insurgents own tactics against them?

Anyway, it sounds like some good news for the Iraqi Police Force.

If the story is accurate, then that's quite a victory. But then again, they're trained by the best, so hey.

Iraqi forces have had a hell of a time, from beginning to end, with just about every possible thing going wrong.

If they can pull themselves together and establish themselves, it will be a tremendous achievement, and earn them respect.

Here's hoping they can pull it off.
