WHAT
Flyering/picketing at "A Gourmet Evening with Phil Bronstein"

(Bronstein is executive editor of the SF Chronicle)

WHEN
Friday, May 16, 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

WHERE

California Culinary Academy, 625 Polk St., San Francisco

(corner of Turk & Polk, 5 blocks from Civic Center BART)

WHO

Sponsored by Friends of Henry -- an ad hoc group organized to support Henry Norr and other silenced journalists

WHY

Tech columnist Henry Norr was fired from the San Francisco Chronicle for participating in protests against the Iraq War. The Chronicle's action has prompted a blizzard of complaints from readers -- thousands of letters and emails. The purpose of this action is to sustain the protest and to counter the Chronicle's dubious rationales defending the firing.

BACKGROUND

For years, Henry Norrs columns on computer technology have been a popular feature of the San Francisco Chronicle. But in March, 2003, the columns suddenly disappeared after Norr took part in anti-war protests on the day after the U.S. invasion of Iraq began. On April 23 he was officially fired.

Norrs case, unfortunately, is not unique. While major networks have brazenly adopted a pro-war stance, reporters and columnists who have expressed skeptical views or views in opposition to war have been fired or silenced, including MSNBCs Phil Donahue; Brent Flynn of the Lewisville Leader in Texas; Ed Gernon, an independent producer working with CBS; Kurt Hauglie of Michigans Huron Daily Tribune; and Peter Arnett of CBS.

The man sounds like a total fruitcake. I mean, emailing his supervisors the night before and telling them he wouldn't be in because he was going to be arrested?

And then putting in for sick time on his timecard?

The newspaper had every right to fire him. He has to prove it was for political reasons. They can prove timecard fraud. They will win.
