Two rail trains in the Washington, DC Metro system collided this afternoon, injuring four people. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening. One train was stopped at the Woodley Park station in northwest DC unloading passengers when an empty train hit it head-on. The second train was travelling so fast that it was partially on top of the second train after the crash.

Harnice says just as their train pulled into the station and stopped, the conductor began screaming for people to get off the train, and the passngers started running.

In a matter of seconds, Clingerman says a second train hit their train head-on and went on top of the first train, sending debris flying.

Both described a lot of smoke and debris in the station.

District officials are trying to determine the cause of the crash. At this time it seems to be accidental.

Currently the red line betwenn Dupont Circle and Van Ness is closed in both directions.

Aside from the other four-year train wreck extended by another carriage in Washington DC this week, is this a common occurence?

It's not common on the DC metro system.

Two systems failed in this incident, the brakes and some automatic control system that keeps trains from crashing into each other. Just one of them failing is extremely rare.
