MRI, CTs, and any other imaging (apart from ultrasound) are not things you should order lightly. Radiation exposure has real risks. Without real indication to order such imaging, it would be irresponsible to just throw the woman in the original post under the scanner just to make her feel better or to look for something with few-to-no signs it is actually there.

That being said, I do agree that the cost of medications and many lab tests are exorbitant, but I can promise you that a tiny, miniscule fraction of that makes it down to the doctors. Where most "big bucks" doctors make their money is in procedures, which does involve more of their time and expertise. That's why you see GI specialists who will make an entire practice out of just doing colonoscopies or cardiologists who only do heart caths. They would actually lose money if they did office visits daily, as the procedures bill for much higher than a level 1 office visit.
