Any one know how to remove unwanted licensed images from Vista?

Hey guys, it's me again......

I've created myself yet another problem.

The gist of the problem lies with the fact that the latest backup evidently was not set as I usually have it [selected folders only] and it copied EVERYTHING!!!!!!

So when I did a restore from the latest backup, I have thousands upon thousands of useless images.
There are numerous icons/logos/pictures from ads etc. - all from my saved documents.
My games have been dissected to a point where it's a smorgasbord of 'parts is parts' crap. Ugh.....
Needless to say I have spent days trying to delete these annoying images, over 10,000, and ran into a slight problem with some of them.

Evidently, per this fellow at Best Buy, the backup copied everything including 'licensed' images, even tho they are useless, thanks to me taking for granted the settings were okay.
[ Normally it's selected pictures/music/documents. But not this time....]

When I try to delete them, I get "permission denied" -----Try again/Cancel
He suggested trying to Safe Mode......didn't work.
He also suggested right clicking and see if they are 'archived'...well, it won't allow any changes to the properties.

So my question is this..........

Has any one got any idea on how to bypass the 'permission' thing?
I've got the 'User Account Control' off....
And I haven't got a password set.
Oh yeah, it won't let me 'drag' them to another folder either.

I was kinda hoping that there would be some one here that might know of something.

The guy at Best Buy said the same thing you guys told me before......ghost imaging [Norton]
But before I do that I must clean out all the junk.

Man oh man this sucks......learn from ones' errors the hard way.
Lesson learned......never to be forgotten.

This "should" allow you to take ownership of a folder, there is another way by using the right-click and going to permissions, but that takes a few steps to do it right...hope it helps

I just added to my windows 7, it didn't set off any bells or whistles with my virus software, and works good, wish I would have found it a few days ago...I ended up doing it the hard way.

Make a Linux boot disc, LiveDVD, or flash drive. Boot to it. Find those files and delete them. Linux doesn't care what permissions Windows has set Its also a free download.

1. Download Linux (recommending Ubuntu Linux for this)

2. Make a Bootable Disc/Drive
   EDIT: Better links!

3. Boot to it. When you turn on your computer, press F12 (Dell) to boot to a disc/drive. If non-Dell, pay attention to the boot screen for the button used to change boot source/options.
   
   
4. Delete your troublesome files
   
   
5. Shutdown Linux
   
   
6. Remove Bootable Disc/Drive and save it for future use!
   
   
7. Start Computer Back Up into Windows as Usual
   

NOTE: These steps will not force you to install Linux. Rather, you'll just be running it temporarily from your bootable disc/drive. Once you boot back into Windows, nothing will have changed at all except that those pesky files will be nowhere to be found


This isn't the only way to reach your goal, but it certainly works by allowing you to work with files on your hard drive without any of the limitations of the Windows file permissions.

You can use the Access Control List to set permissions on a folder. If you give, say "Everyone", full permission on the folder where the images are, you can then delete them. At a "cmd" prompt, do this:

CACLS "C:full folder name." /T /C /G F:Everyone

Use the quotes around the folder name, as shown. Also note the "." (period) after the last backslash after folder name. That means all files in the folder.

Once you've reset the permissions you can delete either the entire folder or the files you choose....

This is weird. Backslashes will not show up in my post. So: There's a backslash after the C: and another after full folder name.

Sorry. That's really unexpected.

EDIT: Strike that. Should be "C:full folder name." /T /C /G "Everyone":F

(Use the backslashes as pointed out above. Also use quotes around "Everyone"; and the F goes after the colon. Sorry. It's been a while since I've done this....

Just thought I'd let you know all my folders are back right again, got rid of those pesky images.
The only images that I was not able to delete was in Windows Photo Gallery but that's okay.
I usually use my 'personal' pictures folder any how. I like to play with GIMP and that itself is not available in Photo Gallery, so I can live with that.
