Should fat people pay higher taxes?

We need to tax handicapped people at a higher rate.

They take up all the good parking spaces in the supermarket parking lot.

Oh, and tall people... because they are taller than me.

At one point in my life I was a 350 pound 16 year old so I'd like to think I know a thing or two about this obesity crisis. I am 125 pounds lighter now and while I aint no George Clooney I am 6'2 and a Security Guard a little chub with some muscle never hurt. Now as such I get tired with this entire idea of the stupid, wasteful, slovenly, inferior to thee attitude is something I have come to highly resent. The only thing a fat tax would do is further a population that gets it enough from everybody around them. Yes it's not healthy but instead of taxation why not take out some of the money out of your yanks incredibly over funded military and put it back into P.E. in public schools. And maybe taxing parents that raise children on tv internet and over processed food should get a bad parenting tax first.

Gravitational potential energy = mgh.
The energy required to lift a 100kg person 100 meters is twice that required to lift a 50kg person the same distance.
If that elevator is in a public building, who is paying for the energy? The taxpayers.

Reeeeally not seeing the problem here. Don't know of too many people the weight and size of a horse.

And of course, unless it is a government building, no we the taxpayers do not foot the bill. The company with the elevator does, through it's accounts with the electricity companies. Even in public buildings, I would suspect the cost to be somewhat minimal compared to other, more serious problems with the state of health across the world.

But if that's all you took away from my reply is arguing semantics over energy use, then I guess the entire point of the reply is lost on you.

No, and guess what. I think if they start that, everyone overweight should stop paying taxes period. Its like giving and inch, someone takes a mile, and you cut them off.

They are already...they pay more sales tax at the grocery store and the at the gas pump.

A small percent maybe pay more sales tax, for specialty items, but food is generally tax free. And most overweight I know, have slower metabolisms due to health conditions, and eat less than any of the thin ones. So that that generally doesnt pan out. They usually don't go out as much either because of the mean spirit of the those in earth reform school, so they don't spend that much on gas usually, unless commuting to work.

So should we make people naturally prone to having more body fat pay taxes and wear fat identification badges too? I was a huuuuuge boy and even now after quitting smoking, sugar pop, alcohol, limit fast food and I hit my home bench set everyday and im still kinda fat. I work a full time job, pay taxes, and volunteer in community events and school programs. Does that make me a society drainer worthy of taxation just because I have a slow metabolism?

The reason is that the government, in its belief, to protect the people, decided that it could not go through another fight, to try to nudge and discourage people, to tax them at a higher rate and pass laws that would end up making the use of such discouraging. And funny how in some states, even though the price per pack is extremely high, it has no effect on those who choose to smoke.

Now it's a freakin fat tax!

Why don't we just rename the damn country "United Socialist States of America". That seems to be the thinking everyone is stuck in anyway.

How about we go back and re-read the documents this country was founded on, and learn what kind of government and society this country started out to be instead of worrying about who is too fat, or too thin.

Maybe they should have thrown Ben Franklin out of the constitutional convention for putting excess wear and tear on the building they were in.

the problem with that is that junk food is usualy gets more food for less price than healthy food, you can get a burger for less than 2 bucks at wendys what can you get that equivalent to that at the grocery store. so as a general rule people with less money usualy will live the more unhealthy lifestlyes. It would than cost more money for them n taxes forcing them to eat even worse driving up healthcare even more

We have a GST here, so every step gets taxed. We pay a crap load already with taxed items, so indeed people who eat more, pay more.

No one I know wakes up one morning and says "You know, I think I'll just get really fat. I like the lifestyle, the sweating, the inability to move freely, the way people stare at you, the squeezing into everyone on the bus. Yeah, I've been missing out all my time as this skinny guy. Time to get obese baby..." and sets out to live the life.

So taxing people based on bad habits doesn't work. Op should know this, or be taught it.

The majority of people who eat junk food are doing so because it's convenient and feeds many. Make them pay more when they can't afford better. Sure that's logical.

Like taxing alcoholic drinks here, suddenly everyone was buying bottles of vodka and fizzy sweet drinks. Instead of the 'alcopops'. Stupid idiot politicians.

Tax tax tax... If we tax the taxes maybe they'll reduce the taxes... but then we may need a tax on the taxed taxes. To keep the coffers swollen with the much needed tax.

Hey I'm not the one forcing anyone to buy healthcare. I don't agree with the mandate. That's precisely why I don't agree that a healthy person who is less of a drain on healthcare resources should have to pay the same as someone who is more of a drain on healthcare resources.
