Mariola, located in the Alicante region of l'Alcoià-The Comtat, is the habitat of eight black foxes, whose coat color have arisen from a genetic mutation or small change, according to a study by the University of Alicante (UA).
This mutation means a small genetic change in the DNA sequence encoding the hair color, explains Antonio Belda, researcher Earth Sciences and Environment of the AU and author of the study.
Biologists believe that the change in coat color corresponds to a spontaneous mutation of origin, as the area's environmental purity comprehensive protection dismisses artificially induced, for example because of toxic waste.
