Orcas trapped in ice fighting to survive in northern Quebec

I just found this remarkable yet highly upsetting article about a pod of Killer Whales that are trapped under ice with only a small area to come up for air. This small unfrozen area of water is quickly freezing up, and when it does the whales will die. Absolutely heartbreaking!!!

Strangely enough, I just watched a movie called "Big Miracle" starring Drew Barrymore that was an almost identicle story with the only difference being that the whales in the movie were Gray Whales. In the movie an icebreaker ship came to the rescue. Hopefully the real life version of this ends up having the same ending, but that is unfortunately highly unlikely.

Actually the movie was based on a real event that happened in Alaska. The spoiler the movie does not want to say is they do not know if the whales actually made it to open ocean. The Native Alaskans do have a respect for the land, and they did what they could do to help save a resource that they used to survive.

The killer whales trapped under ice in a remote Quebec village reached safety after the floes shifted on Hudson Bay, according to the mayor's office in Inukjuak.

Water opened up around the area where the orcas had been coming up for air and the winds seemed to have shifted overnight, creating a passageway to the open water six miles away.
