A group of homeless people in Russia tried to sell 2 containers with highly radioactive uranium-238 to a local scrap dealer. The scrap dealer alerted emergency services which led to Russian security forces seizing the containers so it could not fall into terrorist's hands and be used in a dirty bomb.

RUSSIAN security forces have seized two containers full of highly radioactive uranium-238 after a group of homeless people tried to sell them to a scrap dealer.

"This is obviously a worry," said a Western diplomat. "There is a huge amount of nuclear material just lying around in Russia. Not only is it a threat to local people, but it is potentially a threat to the world at large."

Meanwhile, a truck carrying radioactive materials was seized on Tuesday at the far eastern port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the Ria-Novosti news agency reported.

And several lead containers holding uranium, plutonium and strontium were last week found on a train on its way from Moscow to the southern town of Mineralniye Vody, not far from Chechnya.

OMG, its worse than I thought...

Apparently it is very easy to find radioactive materials for making dirty bombs in Russia...
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the east-coast would be an obvious harbour to use for shipping it to US.

Theyve recently found 20 radioactive burial sites in Belarus.

From Interfax: 20 radioactive burial sites found in Belarus

The burial sites of roughly 20 derelict radiation sources have been discovered in Belarus, the country's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Sychev said in a speech at the 48th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) general conference in Vienna.

Belarus is counting on help from the IAEA for the solution of this problem, he said.

Just discovered? They didnt even know they existed?
Any "homeless" person can just go and dig in the forest and find it...

If a pack of russian hobos have radioactive material, what else do you think is being traded around or simply LOST in that freakin country? Probably a good mix of chemical weapons, suitcase nukes, etc. Stupid ruskies cant even manage anything in their own country.

Augh! Enough plutonium for 5 or 6 bombs missing from Sellafield!
Very disturbing... The other places too. Sellafield has been in the news for a long time in Norway because they want it closed down. To know that there is missing so much plutonium from there is just...
