There were previous threads with similar magnitues in the area sometime earlier this year.

USGS reported that M 6.0 earthquake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands at 9:39 UTC on October 23, 2012. Epicenter was located 398 km (247 miles) SE (141°) from Isangel, Vanuatu and 401 km (249 miles) ESE (103°) from Tadine, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia; at coordinates 22.316°S, 171.675°E. Recorded depth was 127 km (78.9 miles). EMSC reported this earthquake as M 5.6 with depth of 100 km.

That's because it's located right on top of the ring of fire. These magnitudes are absolutely common in this area.

Hi OP.

The Caledonia one was right next to Vanuatu. These large events were only about a day, two days apart.
Then the 5.9 in Japan today. 3 Fairly large ones in quick succession.

Thanks for posting this; New Caledonia got hit some months back, iirc. Not sure what happened after.
