The Politics of Hate and "The Quigley Formula"

When was the last time you personally voted for a candidate you really liked? If you are an independent voter and don't mind "throwing away your vote" then you probably have voted that way recently and intend to do so this November. But if you find you are faced with the choice of voting for Romney because you really hate Obama, or you are going to vote Obama because you really hate the Republican party then that is voting by the politics of hate - I am going to vote for so-and-so because I really hate that other guy and what his party stands for, etc. And the current administration is always worse than the last, though that hardly seems imaginable.

That is what we have been seeing for a long time now, along with campaigns based on smear tactics against the other guy instead of a candidate telling us what is great about himself and what he brings to the table. They make some personal promises but they are mostly telling you they are the candidate of "hope" or "change", a change from that last guy or a hope for something better than what we just have had for the cycle now ending. Welcome to American politics of hate.

The Quigley Formula

The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can "throw the rascals out" at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy.

This appears to be exactly what we have had and this has been going on for quite awhile in our political system. Neither faction is so great because they really are no different in the final analysis. They are not selling us on their great, new ideas because there aren't any. All they can offer us is to not be as bad as the other guy.

We have a two-party system where the two are violently opposed on all the secondary issues but they appear to be in lock-step leading us into a one-way agenda that appears to be global in nature, like a greater had is leading us toward some pre-determined destination that cannot be willingly disclosed. They are different and they are the same. You can be a party-line voter faithful to your party and all it stands for or you can examine the two candidates and select the one who represents your ideals, but in the end they both will take us down that same path of diminished privacies, rights, and liberties.

We've been travelling down that same road so many times now we no longer trust the system, not nearly as much as we used to, and we are not overly ecstatic about the choices of candidates offered but we know we must choose one of the two Demopublicans because the other one is just so repugnant he must be stopped cold, and to vote for an independent candidate we actually like is just a throw-away vote. We tell ourselves and others that third-party candidates will never get elected, and though we might tell ourselves they may be our last best hope we fear in the back of our minds that they will turn out just as bad as any mainstream choices we are offered.

We have to wonder where this all will ultimately lead us. Will America be great again, the dreamland and aspiration of the world's people once more? Or is this just a dwindling spiral taking us down the porcelain bowl? If the ultimate destination we are being led to is any more pleasant, illustrious, or divine then surely it could be divulged for surely we are being led down some pre-determined path by the big-politics machine. Or is is being kept secret for a reason? We don't tell the cattle when we lead them off to slaughter. Neither will we be told what the real agenda is and what future is in store for us. Surely if there were a glimmer, some little sparkle of a nice future ahead they would be slathering on the trimmings and selling on an idea of a great new American dream. Or is this really all about a great new American dread coming our way?

A great many of us get the feeling something new is coming. It seems our leaders don't even want to hint about what that might be. It is coming but now one is dressing it up for us. No one is even bothering with putting lipstick on this pig. Fasten your seat belt because it may get to be a rough ride ahead. Be ready for anything.
