Theft leaves food pantry freezers bare

I found this article in our local newspaper today. Someone broke into the storage shed at the local Salvation Army food pantry and stole about $800 worth of meat. I was stunned that anyone could be so callous.

CLINTON — Freezers formerly stocked with meat are sitting empty this week at the Salvation Army’s food pantry.

And although demand has risen in the area for food assistance, the bare coolers are not a result of providing help to needy residents. Instead, the Salvation Army is left with a couple of fish filets after being the victim of a theft that resulted in more than $800 worth of meat being stolen, according to a Clinton Police Department report.

Salvation Army Lt. Jeanette Jensen said resources were getting low before this happened, and things are beginning to look desperate.

“This hurts,” Jensen said. “This is definitely a punch in the gut.” “Our goal is to help people who need it. We have had to ration recently and because (meat) was taken from us, a lot more people than the Salvation Army will suffer.”

I work at a local homeless shelter that also runs a food pantry and I see people every day that are so grateful for the little bit of food that we can give them. I'm sorry that this is a short post. Just writing about it wrenches my gut.

what's really gut wrenching is that these thieves werent poor folk
but folks a bit higher up on the economic scale,
who used to a better standard of living
than they can now afford, felt entitled to taking that food,
probably got a big upcoming "keeping up with the jones'" BBQ
and they need to keep up appearances

That wouldn't surprise me at all. If those people were in actual need of that food, all they had to do was ask.
