"Federal Security Service director Nikolai Patrushev said a staggering 500 terrorist attacks have been prevented this year -- in what security
experts called a clear attempt to mend the tattered reputation of law enforcement agencies after they failed to avert deadly attacks in August and
September.
The Federal Security Service, or FSB, alone has prevented 200 terrorist attacks so far this year, Patrushev said on NTV television late Tuesday."

"Patrushev did not provide breakdowns for which agencies had averted the other 300 attacks.
He warned, however, that al-Qaida operatives remain active in Chechnya and elsewhere in the North Caucasus.
Security experts said Patrushev's figures were inflated."
