Afghan leader Ahmed Zia Massood narrowly escaped an assassination attempt yesterday. Massood was leaving a campaign rally, when a road-side bomb was detonated as his convoy drove past. Massood is the running mate of the favored Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the upcoming elections. Taliban rebels are suspected to be the source of the attack, and have been trying in recent weeks to disrupt the election process in Afghanistan.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Attackers set off a bomb as a convoy carrying Afghan President Hamid Karzai's vice presidential running-mate and other dignitaries passed along a road in northeastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing one man and injuring five others, officials said.

The vice-presidential hopeful, Ahmed Zia Massood, escaped unharmed, said Khaleeq Ahmed, a spokesman at the presidential palace, but the governor of Badakhshan, where the attack occurred, was among those injured. Ahmed said the governor, Said Ikramuddin Masumi, would recover.

The Afghanistan elections are to occur this weekend, despite a few recent attacks by the Taliban. This is the third attack on President Karzai or Karzai's staff, since campaigning began in September. Karzai is the favorite to win Saturday's election, and hopes that the title of elected President will help to strengthen his efforts for democracy in Afghanistan.

Again hummmm we all know how the winner will be in Aghanistan, their elections will not be any different that the mockery elections that will be done in Iraq.

Welcome to democracy US style. I wonder why the people in Afghanistan will want to kill their US aproved leader, Ooops they are terrorist!!!!!!!! that's why they want to kill the leader.
