Well, all of my sources, which are right there, at the canneries and on the boats say...

This is purely FALSE information as far as the original poster claimed. I do not doubt that their friends up in Alaska didn't get to work this season, that is not at all surprising or unusual.
That part is most likely true, or at least there is a good chance that it is.
But the rest of it, I can say with 100% certainty is FALSE.

The OP has been hoaxed by an exaggeration if anything, and the thread in my opinion, should go into the HOAX category.
But there is a lot of information in the thread that deserves merit!

It is wise to note that those seals have a habitation range that carries the herd out of Alaska waters, so it's safe to assume if it is indeed radiation sickness.....they're acquiring it from a contamination far outside Alaska waters.

It is also wise to note that Polar Bear's diet consist mainly of seals and the like so it would not be unheard of for them to suffer the same type of sickness after eating said seals as then it would be in the food chain. Polar bears are not limited to Alaska waters either as they have been known to swim across the straight every once in a while.

It is possible they are hitting a pool of contaminated water....yet...it's not going to be found directly around Alaska's coast line. It would appear the way the currents carry (like the jet stream) we're just too far north for that type of concentration from where the source of contamination sits.

Third, seafood restaurants go bankrupt due to mutant seafood.

it almost sounds like all the self sustainable resources we have and always enjoyed are being systematically ruined. the things that are being ruined; bees (pollination), and coastlines? what do you think that will do to us if no one can stand up as a representative and say enough is enough, what are we to do? fire them? does anyone know if the bee epidemic is world wide or just in (US)America? This country could be so much more to the world with the right visionaries at the helm. somewhere along the line a lot of people have decided that they don't care about anything anymore. now the people who say we don't deserve it are be heard instead of being considered jealous. we all need to realize we are above nothing when it comes to working and contributing to our society.

Correct on all your points, but the fact remains that as of this time there has been no definitive answer as to the cause of the disease. With the advent of warmer weather we should soon be able to gain more information, as the winter cooling prevented further investigation.

It is obvious that there is some sort of environmental factor in play, but what that is has yet to be determined. I sincerely hope that they find the cause to be something other than radiation, but that has not yet been entirely ruled out.

One of the more recent updates I posted to the thread was that an increased number of scientists were goin to the area to investigate further. Let's hope that new results are forthcoming and the issue can be laid to rest (as far as radiation goes) and a remedy can be pursued.

What do you do with a radioactive ghost ship from Hell? Blow it up and go "whee!" was not my first thought.

Exactly what they did. Instead of towing ashore for salvage of scrap metals or letting it drift ashore to rot like so many other vessels, they sink it. That is not standard procedure by the way. Or maybe it is new standard procedure for any (more than one?) ships from Japan now. Anyway, it sinks and pretty soon the water is calm and alll gone.

If a fire broke out aboard during shelling then that would be a result of fuel oil still on board, would it not? Why didn't they remove the fuel?

If a nearby vessel wanted to claim salvage rights, why not? Don't tell me they "couldn't tow it", if it floats it is towable.. They were denied and the CG sunk it. Hmmm...

I would tend to agree, something is afoot....and until we get a few scientists squeamish (Alaska waters are rough) we may never know the truth.

This ship was sunk a few weeks back. Surely there cannot be that much radiation from one ship that was swept away before Fukushima was put on alert?

If you flagged or starred this thread, hit yourself in the head with a tack hammer.

What a GREAT example of how third-hand information from a social networking cite is NOT HOW YOU CONFIRM NEWS and is closer to playing the game 'telephone' than actual news.

As others have already noted, this is likely referencing the well-publicized sinking of a Japanese 'ghost ship' by the US Navy. The ship was not found to be 'radioactive', and in fact was found to not contain any fuels or contaminates at all.

So either the person who sent the OP the tweet or text or whatever is an idiot, or the OP is intentionally hoaxing. I'm going to guess the former, unless we get some ACTUAL CONFIRMATION from someone other than your neighbor's friend's dog's groomer's cousin's nephew on twitter.

THANK YOU! ATS used to be a great forum for credible news, and crap like this used to be examined critically. Now it just escapes right through and becomes main stream.

Why is this thread not in the hoax bin already?????????????????

Do a Google search over the last 24 hours for "Alaska fishing shut down", and THE ONLY website where it's mentioned is this thread on ATS. If Alaska fishing was shut down from radioactive fall out, the twitter universe and social media would be a blaze with information. THERE IS NOTHING.

It's about time people who post crap stories like this either be banned or their accounts suspended.

Actually any radioactive contamination is potentially deadly. Think of the logistics. Going aboard the vessel at sea and attaching tow lines. Towing it to a harbor. Cutting it up with oxy acetylene torches. Hauling furnace sized chunks to the smelter and then smelting it and selling it back to you as office products. And the whole time, the radiation alarms are howling.

All along the path that I just described, little bits of contaminated stuff are being left behind like a trail of hot bread crumbs. You spread it everywhere. In the harbor, along roadways, scrapyards and finally your home. Best to just sink the fargin thing and be done with it.... which_is_exactly_what_they_did.
Kind of like other nuke waste when you think about it. Just bury it or throw it overboard and let future generations deal with it.

Why is this thread not in the hoax bin already?????????????????

Because despite what you and some others think(?????????????????), it has not been proven to be fake yet. Otherwise it would have been.

See, in the absence of any news about rads from Japan at all, then it is left to sites like this to dig and bring any information we can find for others to review.

Rather than complain, maybe you should help.

Once again, they tested the ship.....it is NOT radioactive.....they would not have tried to salvage a hot hulk of metal if that was the case.........

The majority of the basis for this thread is purely conjecture and not based on anything other than hearsay.

Hate to bust yer bubble.....they were not wearing suits when they boarded it to tie it off in their attempt to tow it.....no radiation on the vessel exists........

Your post is nothing more than floating an opinion based in fantasy...at the very least what you want to believe. Which currently is quite far from the truth.

So yes......this thread does not deserve the attention it has garnered...the hoax bin might be a good place for it. Perhaps if it started off with a factual basis for the assertion...maybe...instead we got in yer face doom porn as a OP.

Couldn't think of a finer example of how group think warps others perceptions so easily.

Yes the ship was sunk no it wasnt RADIOACTIVE since it was washed out to sea before the nuclear accident. If you want to see why they sunk it this makes it pretty clear it wasnt worth salvage. Its a giant rust bucket and would never be declared sea worthy again without spending alot of money.

there are many ways of dealing with radioactive waste...
but just like the electric/hydrogen/tesla cars...there is no money in it for TPTB
hence no cleaning up...

My wife and I were just watching Netflix and she received a text. She has a close friend she grew up with who works part of the year in California and the other half in Alaska. Her job in Alaska is at a cannery of some sort. She just sent a text message updating all of her friends that she will in fact, not be traveling to Alaska due to "the Navy just sank a Japanese ghost ship wrought with nuclear fallout off the coast of Alaska because they didn't know what else to do with it." The ship was part of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and was apparently swept out to see with no one on it, but covered in radioactive material. Now fishing along the coast of Alaska, the canneries, and other coastal businesses have been shut down due to nuclear fallout. She said nuclear fallout out is all over the place up there; it's in the water, it's in the soil, it's everywhere. She's bummed out about her job falling through, but also warned "don't eat the seafood...radiation levels are really high."

This is another HOLY [SNIP] moment; as there's over a five million tons of debit from Japan floating in the Pacific and the news three days ago was saying that it's looking like it might begin to make landfall on the West Coast (WA, OR, CA) late this year.

Stock up on your iodine folks, and stay away from seafood. If we hear more, I'll post.

....updating as text conversation occurs....

"The Navy got radiation readings over 3 miles from the ghost ship."

...will update if she texts more.

Seeing as the tsunami happened BEFORE any radio active leaks from Fukushima, the derelict fishing vessel could not have been radio active.
Scaremongering (again)?

Glad you are not eating any seafood, all the more for us!

ATS is rapidly becoming a site where all sorts of crackpots can post anything. These people are destroying the reasons why ATS was started.

This thread is a perfect example of how the Moderators and owners of this website are failing to do what they intended to do... deny ignorance. The credibility of this site has been destroyed years ago.

The ship was sunk almost a month ago. It was sunk because it was a potential hazard to other ships in the area.

If someone wanted to salvage the ship, they would have been entitled to it, and the Coast Guard wouldn't have sunk the ship. That alone lends credence to the fact that the ship was not radioactive.

A shut down of an entire fishing industry would be front page news everywhere.

No sources from OP. Just a mention of a text message his wife received.

Either this is a hoax, or a failure on the OP's part to fact check before jumping online and crying wolf.

Hi all. Just joined ATS. Been a fan for a while. About Coast Guard sinking of Japanese trowler. Correct me if Im wrong but wasnt stuff washed out to sea before the reactor started to leak? If so how could the ship be radioactive? Also if it was radioactive why would the Canadian ship Bernice C clam salvage rights to it? The bernice C tried to tow the Japanese ship so someone had to board the ship to hook up tow lines. If so wouldnt those seamen need medical help if the ship was that radioactive? Things to think about.

I did help. I searched to try and find ANY information, let alone credible information, that Alaska fishing was shut down, and didn't find ANYTHING. No proof what-so-ever that Alaskan fishing is shut down from radioactive fallout = hoax.
