"Passengers aboard the Jewel of the Seas faced an ugly sight on arrival in Saint John Sunday a dead whale impaled on the cruise ship's bow.

It was not known if the 20-metre finback whale was alive or dead when the ship struck it somewhere between Quebec City and the Bay of Fundy.

Approximately 100 cruise passengers gathered at the ship's bow to watch and take pictures as a rope was tied around the large mammal. The whale was draped across the bulbous bow the steel nose that projects from the ship at water level.

New Yorker Dennis Buck said passengers didn't find out about the whale until they arrived in port and saw the animal for themselves.

Laurie Murison, of the Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station, said because finbacks can stretch 35 metres and longer, they often fall victim to ship collisions."
