There isn't very much information about this find yet, but hopefully in a few days they may be able to figure out where this totem-pole has come from. Judging from it's battered appearance, it does seem to be authentic and rather old, but we'll have to wait until it is examined by Grant Keddie, archaeology curator at the Royal B.C. Museum.

The origin of the totem pole that washed up at Ogden Point remains a mystery, but some answers may come today when the battered pole is inspected by Grant Keddie, archaeology curator at the Royal B.C. Museum.

Cool find

I used to live 5 minutes away from there.

My guess is that it came from one of the Islands near Washington state or slightly up island near the Sooke area. Both places have a large native population.

In reality it could have even come from much further north from places like Haiida Gwaii and the Queen Charlotte islands. My guess is that this pole isn't that old since debris from Japan has already made its way across the Pacific.

I wish I remembered more about the local ocean currents.

It does appear to be the same totem as in the pictures on this site.

Why is the media repeating a story that is 2-3 years old, with no additional information?

It's because it's easier to report stories like that than the truth. See here.

No offense, OP!

Shakes fist in the air and curses your name!

I clicked on your link expecting an answer to the topic of this thread, instead I got directed to a thread I just closed out of due to lack of interest.

The Times Colonist which is the newspaper in the OP has a habit of reprinting old stories but this time it appears to be a genuine screw up on behalf of their editors unless I missed something.

Peace.
