Huge black circle around the moon

I also live in Reading, but the town centre.

The sky was especially clear last night and the moon looked stunning but I didn't see any halo, could be down to the light pollution though!

Huge black circle around moon = It's bloody nippy out.

I live in Theale, so just on the outskirts of Reading and I always get a clear view of the nights sky as there is much street light where I am.

Having said that, I spoke to my friend who lives in Coley, so alot nearer the town centre and he could also see it. This was pushing 11pm last night though.

To be fair I probably just didn't notice, I was a few beers into a poker game and just out the back having a smoke!

Haha that would probably explain it. You couldn't have missed it if you looked up - it was huge!

The volly is cool but The Crown is better :-)

It's usually means a storm is on the way.

The official meaning: The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight (which of course is reflected sunlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.

BTW- To take a good picture the aperture needs to be open for longer to catch the light in the darkness. I suggest using a tripod too if you have one because when the aperture is open longer the camera has to be still or the picture will be blurry

Old wives tales ( like the old wives who were my mother and grandmother) said that a ring around the moon usually indicates snow in the near future.
I think you guys had some pretty nasty weather in the past couple of days yes?

I can see it tonight,just came on here to see if anyone had said about it,very weird,,Im in East Midlands. I have seen something like this around the sun as well.

I can see one, here in France. Common in the UK, depends on your idea of common, they appear fairly regularly in the winter, and I think you can see the same thing around the sun, when there are thin high clouds, which usually proceed rain clouds.
DO NOT look directly at the sun. Look on line for pictures.

Cant believe I havent seen one before Im addicted to looking up,day and night. It is probably something to do with weather as yeh we have had some bad winds/rain and snow up north.

With looking right at the sun,I know its bad but I have to say Ive been sectioned quite alot and mostly in the summer,I would stare right at the sun for at least 5 minutes a time,,it never did anything to me to my knowledge but I guess I was probably lucky.

I've noticed, I'm in Southern UK, It looks to me like multi-coloured rings..much like the colours of a rainbow, I'ts probably caused by pollution in the air.

In upstate NY state, moon halos have been a regular occurrance for about 20 years now... or longer. Maybe I just started noticing them then. I just thought that everybody knew about them.... Interesting that these seem to be new to you in the UK.
