Ali Imron convicted of the bombing of a nightclub in Bali that killed 202 people was drinking coffee. Imron was quickly escorted from the shopping center by his guards, where security had recently been tightend due to terrorism concerns, after being spotted by a reporter.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A Bali bomber serving a life term for his role in the nightclub blasts that killed 202 people was treated by police to an outing at an up-market shopping mall in the Indonesian capital, police admitted Thursday.

was spotted Wednesday sipping coffee at a Starbucks in the central Plaza Indonesia mall, where security has been tightened after a wave of bombings targeting Western interests in recent years.

He was accompanied by Brigadier-General Gorris Mere, who is involved in the Bali investigations, and a number of armed guards, who quickly escorted Imron to a waiting car and drove away after being spotted by reporters.

Police were initially unable to confirm Imron's outing, but Thursday morning, after reports appeared in newspapers, the national police spokesman said the excursion was part of an effort to investigate terror cases.

"As long as it's for the investigation, anything can be done. About the location, it is merely technical. If the examiner or investigator thinks it is necessary then it would be allowed. No problem," said Inspector-General Paiman.

Other police officials said Imron had been brought to Jakarta in connection with another case. Paiman declined to say how long Imron would remain in the capital.

You would think that this was a joke!. The guy killed 202 people. And he gets an outing at Starbucks! Boy I heard that the jails in Bali were rough. This really borders on sheer stupidity. Im sure Starbucks will want to build a ad campaign around this one.

Starbucks what a joke it makes me sick what kind of justice is that?
Its a disgraceful incident that is a mocky to the worlds efforts to stamp out terrorism. Not to mention how it must make the victims relatives feel.

I know, esp the way they brushed off the issue. SO what if he was being questioned. Was the interrigator going for the "good cop" role?

Playing Devils advocate a bit, it' possible they took him there for other reasons... clandestine ID parade maybe, or they maybe the wanted to see the reaction of someone else they knew to be in that Starbucks at the time..

just a thought.

I guess I was thinking along the lines of having some witness brought into the coffee shop and asked if they recognized anyone.. then again I guess he'd be quite a famous face over there, so maybe it's it was a daft idea..who knows?

Of course it's also possible that I've been watching too many spy movies!!

Waaaaay too many spy movies. Honestly I cannot think of a reason why they would have him out. If he was going to a court appearence, return him to his cell.

What next? Does he have Friday night Pizza Party at Shakys?

OK, why isint this dude a corpse already? He was convicted of killing 202 people, I see no point to keep him above ground, he should have been executed upon conviction. Other than possible intel to be gathered from him he serves no purpose, and even so why are they dragging him out to a starbucks, let him have institutional coffee like the rest of the world does at work.

Im not sure. Bali does not have a death penalty. The anti death penalty crowd would reason that its barbaric and cruel and unusual. That guy should be pushing up dasies by now. How about the barbarism commited on his victems! Coffee? No way he should get an alotment of water and NOTHING else. he is supposed to be prison. not Club MED BBALI for chriost sake!

Dosnt Indonesia have the death plenty? Im not 100% sure but I think the death plently would apply in Bail.

Indonesians court system i bet is run by muslims. You know what muslims say about terrorist attacks, they are only defending themselves. clearly reflects their attuitudes to the bali bombers. It's more like an act to the ralian government, government trade agreements etc. But the reality is ndonesians are proud of their bali bombers.

This same thing happened with timor. The soilder went in and didn't care if the savages killed the timorese people. The commander of the army was never taken to jail i believe.

Christians trying to get justice in an islamic dominated country is just a waste of time.

Well, the article says the police were out during the course of an investigation. My guess is the police all wanted Starbucks, so off they go. The fact they had this guy with them was just the way it was. They were presumably en route to somewhere else, or coming back from somewhere else, related to the investigation for which this guy had to be present.

In a ritzy mall? Why not leave him shackled in the police van? Does Bali have the Kerry plan for crime already in place?
