The Arab League has warned Syria it has one day to sign a deal allowing the deployment of observers or it will face economic sanctions.

More than 3,500 people have died since the protests began in March, the United Nations estimates.

Damascus is objecting to the league's plan to bring 500 observers to Syria to monitor the situation on the ground amid continuing crackdown on protests

It is about time something is being done against the violence towards protesters in Syria. I think Syria has no choice but to sign and allow for the observers to watch for violence. Can it really afford economic sanctions? What is your input ATS?

Sorry if this is posted already, I searched but found nothing. Delete if necessary.

Do you really think the Syrian regime gives a gnat’s fartpacket for sanctions? Their only hope is to kill off the opposition and then the violence will quieten down. This is the modus operandi of all these repressive states and has worked in the past, so why not now.

The Syrian leadership are in too deep. The Hague or suicide will haunt them – not sanctions.

Regards

Imposing sanctions now is pretty futile in the face of 3,500 dead citizens. Economic sanctions on a state hell bent on retaining power and, as the member above has outlined-destroying the opposing would be regime(s).

It's kind of like refusing a schoolyard bullies business at the canteen, isolation IMO will not deter Asad.

Not to be tool about it but please don't use abbreviations like 'b4' again, ATS is one of the few sacred places to escape that sort of smear of the English language.

I have a very credible source inside the Arab league who can not be revealed for security purposes that has suggested this was via MSN Messenger
