In the beginning the universe is nothing more than an infinitely dense collection of it's most basic elements. At some point a chain reaction is sparked causing a massive explosion resulting in the universe expanding to the form we all know and love today. Everything with mass has a gravitational pull, all objects with mass are attracted to all other objects with mass. It is this force, gravity, that is constantly pulling the universe back together. Gravity is not strong enough to instantly halt the universe's expansion, but it does continually slow the expansion.
